Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Both sets of parents were old friends, so Mom and Dad immediately went over to see what was up.
Samuel’s dad looked miserable. “They’re planning the wedding.”
I was confused. “How much could a wedding cost? Enough to sell company stock?”
His parents looked at each other and pulled out this thick wedding planning binder.
This is Lily’s wishlist. Custom gown from some top designer, huge pink diamond ring, and the venue alone
s two million just to rent.”
almost choked.
Even with decent money, the Ellingtons couldn’t afford to blow cash like this.
Here’s the kicker-they’re throwing this massive wedding but won’t even legally get married. She’s not even officially family yet and wants to drop almost thirty million. If things go south between them, we’re
crewed.”
My parents and I just sat there stunned. Mom tentatively asked: “And Samuel’s really okay with this?”
When his parents nodded, I could see how defeated they were.
After we left their place, Mom was stressed too. “What the hell is so amazing about this girl that’s got both boys acting insane?”
grabbed my stuff while giving my parents a heads up:
They’re all adults making their own stupid choices. We’re not getting involved.”
Someone bought the Ellington stock pretty fast. The company Samuel’s dad built from scratch now mostly belonged to strangers.
Around the same time, my nationals results came in. When I saw I’d won first place, I was jumping out of
my skin with excitement.
My performance video blew up online-over a million views in an hour.
Mom and Dad finally had something good to focus on, watching that video nonstop.
All my friends kept dragging me out to celebrate.

We were all drinking and having a blast. I got a little buzzed, so I stepped outside for some air.
That’s when I saw Lily, who supposedly worked until midnight every night planning this wedding, climbing out of some luxury car.
When I saw who she was with, I almost burst out laughing. Everything was playing out exactly like my past
life.
Lily was still messing around with that same rich asshole she’d married before.
I watched them walk into the hotel across the street. The street was pretty empty, so I hung back and
followed.
I could hear Lily’s sickeningly sweet voice: “Babe, I’m sitting on thirty mil now. Will your parents let us get
married?”
The guy chuckled. “If my folks knew how you got that money, they’d lose their minds.”
Lily wasn’t even ashamed.
“So what? I earned every penny.”
“You have no clue how gross it is having to look at his burned-up face every day.”
‘Once I figure out how to squeeze more out of him, I’m outta there. Then we can finally tie the knot, right?”
That conversation sobered me up real quick.
Samuel was getting played hard and losing most of his family’s money doing it.
But this time around, I wasn’t touching their mess with a ten-foot pole.
I went back inside and partied with my friends until way late.
No shows coming up, so I planned to sleep in. But sirens woke me up early the next morning.
I looked out and saw an ambulance parked at Samuel’s place.
Mom and Dad had already rushed over.
I watched them wheel Samuel out-he was unconscious while his parents climbed in the ambulance, crying their eyes out.
As for Lily, she just watched from the doorway for a minute, then went back inside.
When my parents came back, they were shaking their heads: “It’s awful. Samuel’s burns got seriously

infected. He’s been burning up with fever since last night and started seizing this morning.”
“The Ellingtons bent over backwards with all those crazy demands just so Lily would take care of him. And look how that turned out-he’s in the ICU.”
“The wedding’s supposed to happen any day now. What a nightmare,”
I kept my mouth shut, just sat by the window with my coffee, watching the Ellington house.
Right on schedule, less than an hour later, that rich prick showed up.
