Chapter 7

Chapter 7

I went off to compete in nationals.

The other dancers were all incredibly talented, which had me stressed out of my mind.

I threw myself completely into the competition-nothing but practice, practice, practice.

But ten minutes before I was supposed to go on stage, I got a voice message from Samuel.

Probably couldn’t type with his bandaged hands.

“Hey Eliana, heard you’re at some dance competition. Got good news-Lily and I are getting engaged

tomorrow.”

“I’ll save you some candy when you get back.”

I rolled my eyes in disgust, tossed my phone aside, and headed for the stage.

The lights poured down like water. The moment the music started, my body moved with the rhythm.

All those hours of practice paid off-even with my nerves, I nailed every single move.

With each leap, my flowing dress seemed to float in the spotlight.

Dylan, Samuel, Lily—I forgot them all. In that moment, I just wanted to make up for what I’d lost in my past

ife.

When the dance ended, the whole place went dead silent. I started to panic, but then one of the judges tarted clapping.

couldn’t help but tear up. For the first time, I knew what it was like for even the wind to taste sweet on the

way home.

couldn’t wait to tell Mom and Dad, but the first person I saw when I got back was Samuel.

He was still smiling, but maybe I was imagining things-when our eyes met, he seemed to freeze for a second

I frowned. “What are you doing here?”

Samuel got lucky with his injuries. His legs were severely burned but not completely destroyed.

He could actually stand now. Though he walked with this awkward limp.

Chapter 7

I stopped about thirty feet away. When I didn’t move closer, he had to hobble over to me. Every few steps, he’d glance up at me, then look all awkward.

“Eliana, why didn’t you text me back?”

I almost laughed. “Forgot. What do you want?”

Samuel’s wounds were still healing. He carefully pulled out a small box of wedding favors from his pocket.

“I got engaged. You missed the candy.”

That’s it?

I was dying to get home and share my news. “I’m not really eating sweets right now.”

I started walking toward the house.

But then Samuel said something completely insane: “Eliana! Stop being so childish. I know you’ve always

had a thing for me. But it’s never gonna happen between us, so are you planning to ignore me for the rest of

your life?”

What the hell????!

I stopped dead, slowly turning around to stare at him.

Dead serious, I said: “You’re completely insane. Say something that disgusting again and I’m telling your iancée.”
