chapter86

On the night before the interview, Claudine was still checking her documents, practicing the interview process in front of the mirror over and over.

Even though she was fully prepared and confident in her thesis and expertise.

She saw this day as the beginning of her new life and took it very seriously.

For the past five years, she had given up her own life for so-called love. From now on, she would shine on her own path.

No longer someone’s wife, no longer someone’s mother, just Claudine!

She left the study late, and after preparing everything, Claudine washed up and lay down in bed.

Looking at the familiar bedroom, she felt a faint excitement in her heart, like a bird about to escape its cage.

Tomorrow, when the sun rises, she would walk into a new journey of life, bathed in sunlight.

She couldn’t tell if her heart, about to leap out of her chest, was from nerves or excitement.

But this vigorous heartbeat made her feel her own vitality.

This feeling of being so nervous about her future that her breath quickened made her blood seem to burn.

She pictured her future in her mind.

She remembered a quote she had once read: “From now on, the world lies before me, pointing to wherever I wish to go. I am completely and absolutely in charge of myself.”

Claudine didn’t sleep all night, but when she got up, she was still full of energy.

She had prepared everything, changed into a proper suit, and put on light makeup.

After breakfast, Claudine checked her documents once more to make sure she had everything, then picked up her bag and headed for the door.

The weather today was just as she had imagined, sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a golden glow on the floor.

She could even imagine that with such good weather, the sun must be very warm.

Step by step, Claudine walked toward the door, just one step away from stepping into the sunlight.

But Angie called out to her from behind.

“Mrs. Barrette, what are you going to do?”

Claudine stopped and turned to look at Angie.

She was in a great mood today and smiled at Angie, “Tm going out for something, I won’t be back for lunch.”

With that, Claudine was about to leave.

“No!”

Angie was shocked.

Claudine hadn’t gone out these days, and Angie thought it was because she knew about Damian’s instructions.

She hadn’t expected that today, Claudine almost went out.

Angie stepped in front of Claudine, blocking the door.

“Mrs. Barrette, Mr. Barrette said that without his permission, you can’t go anywhere.”

Claudine looked at Angie, as if she didn’t understand the meaning behind her words.

Where was she going, and why did she need Damian’s permission?

“What does this mean? He wants to lock me up here?”

Angie looked troubled.

She was just a servant. In the past, she had only dared to gossip a little, and even that had almost gotten her fired by Mrs. Barrette.

Now, Mr. Barrette wouldn’t let Mrs. Barrette leave the house, and she had to act as the go-between…

“Mrs. Barrette, this is Mr. Barrette’s decision. Maybe you should call Mr. Barrette and ask him?”

After saying this, Angie didn’t dare meet Claudine’s eyes and could only lower her head.

Claudine looked at Angie.

She knew that as a servant, Angie would never dare stop her without Damian’s orders.

Claudine took out her phone and dialed Damian’s number.

The mechanical tone on the other end rang for a long time, but no one answered.

Claudine pressed the redial button again and again, but each time, she was met with that same hateful, despair-induc- ing voice.

Just like that day, when she lay in a pool of blood…

Claudine suddenly shivered, a chill rising from the soles of her feet and quickly crawling up her spine.

She turned to look at the dazzling sun outside, so bright and blinding.

Even the weather was so similar.

A sense of foreboding welled up inside her, and even the hand holding her phone began to tremble uncontrollably.

“Mrs. Barrette… you should go back. When Mr. Barrette returns, you can clear up the misunderstanding together.”

Angie tried to persuade her, bracing herself.

But how could Claudine agree!

Today was such an important day for her!

She had looked forward to this day as if awaiting a rebirth.

She had prepared for so long, all for today!

Claudine made up her mind.

She hung up the phone and rushed out the door without a second thought.

Angie reacted quickly.

“Mrs. Barrette, you can’t leave!”

She shouted as she called for others to come over.

Claudine ran forward without caring about her appearance, while the people behind her shouted, “Mrs. Barrette, you can’t leave!”
