chapter26

Claudine walked into the living room, pressed the remote to close the curtains, out of sight and out of mind.

Damian led Audrey into the elevator.

You’re not well. Why are you waiting for me downstairs!”

Audrey pulled the coat tighter around herself, her smile gentle, though her words carried a hint of concern.

You just said that Ms. Hogan is your wife and that she lives right below me. How could I possibly stay at home and relax after hearing that?

No wonder she seemed a bit awkward when she came over today. She must have known who I was all along!”

Damian stood in the elevator, his brows furrowed the entire time.

I didn’t think this through. I’ll take care of it.”

With that, Damian pressed the button for Claudine’s floor.

Audrey glanced at him. Are you going over right now? You don’t seem very calm. Why don’t you come to my place for a drink first? Once you’ve calmed down, you can talk to her properly. I don’t want you two to have a misunder- standing because of me.”

At that moment, the elevator arrived at Claudine’s floor.

Damian stepped out of the elevator.

No, you go up and rest first.”

As the elevator doors slowly closed, Audrey could only watch as Damian disappeared from her sight.

When the doorbell rang, Claudine had just finished her shower and was getting ready to rest.

She glanced at the timeit was nearly midnight. Who could be knocking at this hour?

In recent days, she had read many news stories on her phone about women living alone being attacked. On top of that, her video doorbell was broken, so she couldn’t see outside, making her even more reluctant to open the door.

Damian pressed the doorbell for a long time, but no one answered.

He looked up at the door number again, making sure it was the right place.

At that moment, Damian naturally assumed that Claudine knew he was there and was deliberately refusing to open the door.

He had never had much patience with Claudine. Thinking of what she had done, Damian began pounding on the door

forcefully.

Already a bit frightened, Claudine grew even more scared as she listened to the loud banging on the door.

She immediately called the building manager.

After a while, things finally quieted down outside. Claudine guessed the manager must have arrived.

Damian looked at the man in uniform in front of him, his face dark as thunder.

My wife lives inside!”

The building manager looked at the welldressed man before him, a bit uncertain.

Maybe it really was a misunderstanding?

Sorry, could you please call your wife? We’re just looking out for the residentssafety. I hope you understand.”

Damian had no choice but to take out his phone and call Claudine.

He put the call on speaker, his face still grim.

At this point, the manager could sense that this man was no ordinary person.

That kind of presencehe couldn’t possibly be a thief!

He forced a smile, waiting for the call to go through and the misunderstanding to be cleared up.

Unexpectedly, the next second, a cold mechanical voice came from the phone: Sorry, the number you have dialed is not in service. Please check the number and try again!”

For a moment, the air seemed to freeze.

Even Damian couldn’t believe it.

He glanced at his phone, confirming that the number was indeed Claudine’s.

This woman had actually blocked him!

For the first time in his life, Damian experienced what it meant to be embarrassed.

He coughed twice, put away his phone, and said to the staff in front of him, My wife and I are having a bit of a dis- agreement!

Call her for me and ask her to open the door!”

At first, the building manager thought this man looked dignified and might be telling the truth, but now, the more he thought about it, the more he felt something was off.

Still, just in case, he called the resident to confirm.

Claudine had been standing behind the door the whole time, but the door was soundproof, so she couldn’t hear what

was being said outside.

Just then, the building manager called her.

Ms. Hogan, there’s a man outside claiming to be your husband! Would you mind opening the door to see if it’s a mis- understanding?”

Hearing this, Claudine became even more convinced that the person outside was a bad guy.

He even dared to claim to be her husband!

Not to mention that Damian didn’t even know she lived here, and even if he did, he would never come looking for her in the middle of the night, braving the wind and snow!

I’m not married, what husband are you talking about!
