At City Hall’s entrance, I waited less than ten minutes before seeing Scott.
He seemed to have aged ten years overnight, dark circles shadowing his eyes, his suit jacket crumpled, radiating utter defeat.
He stared at me, eyes bloodshot.
“What you said is fake, right?”
“You’re lying to me! You want revenge, so you made up this ridiculous excuse!”
He refused to believe his proudest asset–the so–called “love” he traded his inheritance rights for–was nothing but a carefully orchestrated scheme from the start.
And he was the fool kept in the dark.
I couldn’t be bothered to argue, turning to enter City Hall.
He grabbed my wrist, grip crushing enough to shatter bone. “Kimberly, look me in the eyes! Tell me you didn’t lie!”
“Scott,” I shook off his hand, gaze colder than his, “are you worthy?”
Three words, like three sharp slaps, shattered his last shred of dignity.
He staggered back, face drained of color.
Just then, Amanda came running over, sobbing. “Mr. Scott!”
She threw herself at Scott, saw his broken state, and instantly targeted me. “Kimberly! You’ve gone too far!”
“Mr. Scott lost everything because of you! What more do you want?”
“You ruined his company just to punish him for loving me?
“How can your heart be so vicious!”
I watched her clumsy act, finding it laughable.
“Loving you?” I raised an eyebrow, “You’re sure he loves you?”
Amanda’s face froze.
I stepped closer, eyes locking on the mint–leaf bracelet at her wrist.
“This bracelet–Maria designed it, didn’t she?”

“Those mint candies you love? Maria’s favorite too.”
“You copy her style, mimic her tastes, even force her speech patterns.‘
With each word, Amanda paled further.
“You–what nonsense are you spouting!” She retorted, flustered.
I ignored her, turning to Scott’s ashen face.
“Scott, you can’t even spot a counterfeit. How dare you say ‘love‘ to me?”
“Your love for me was fake. Your ‘affection‘ for her? Just seeing another’s shadow through her.”
“You’re pathetic.”
I stopped looking at them and walked straight into City Hall.

The paperwork was quick. Holding the Divorce Decree, the boulder crushing my chest for three years finally lifted.
I stepped outside to find Russell’s car parked at the entrance.
I pulled the door open, about to get in, when Scott lunged like a madman, clawing at the door. “Kimberly, you can’t leave!”
“Let’s start over, okay?
“I was wrong! Truly wrong!”
“I love you! Always you!
“Nothing to do with Maria! Less with Amanda!”
He babbled through tears and snot, looking nothing like the prince of Elite Social Circles.
I looked at him and suddenly laughed.
“Scott, you know what?”
“Three years ago, Maria was there the day my leg was broken.”
