Chapter 18

Scott paused when he noticed no footsteps behind him. Turning, he saw Pamela stifling a laugh.

“What’s so funny? I’m being serious here.”

Pamela cleared her throat, suppressing her smile. “Didn’t want to interrupt your work.”

She trailed behind him into the living room, watching him assemble the cat tree and position the litter box.

“You’re so patient and meticulous,” Pamela mused. “What a catch…”

Scott froze while arranging the cat bed, the tips of his cars flushing crimson.

“Sorry miss, but this catch is off the market.”

He finished adjusting the bed just as the words left his lips.

When no reply came, Scott glanced back.

Pamela crouched on the floor, face ghostly pale, clutching her chest as she gasped for air!

Panic flashed in Scott’s eyes.

He rushed over, wrapping an arm around her while fishing medication from the coffee table drawer. Only when color returned to her cheeks and her breathing steadied did he relax.

“Told you to rest properly,” Scott chided sternly. “Now look at you.”

Pamela offered a weak smile. “Don’t worry, won’t happen again.”

Yet Scott’s expression remained stormy. These blissful days felt surreal-like a fragile dream that might shatter. See- ing her collapse had choked him with terror.

Noticing his stony silence, Pamela’s eyes darted to the Ginger Tabby curiously batting at the cat tree. Scooping up the feline, she thrust it toward Scott.

“Ginger Tabby,” she teased, “help me cheer up this

grumpy man.”

The cat squirmed mid-air, four stubby legs flailing, clueless about placating humans,

Scott’s gaze shifted between woman and cat, the anger in him melting away. A soft chuckle escaped as he cradled the feline.

“Just this once…”

Pamela cut him off, raising three fingers. “No next time!”

Night fell as they settled in. The Ginger Tabby dozed off after dinner.

Scott prepared dishes to Pamela’s taste, glancing toward the living room. There she sat, transfixed by the sleeping cat -tucking a miniature blanket around it, smoothing its fur with tender strokes.

“He’s not going anywhere,” Scott murmured, amused.

Pamela looked up, eyes sparkling. “He’s absolutely precious!”

Scott nodded slowly, his lingering gaze fixed on her.

“Truly… precious.”

The cat was adorable. So was she.

Pamela froze, cheeks burning as realization dawned. She scurried to the dining table without another word.

Later, while Scott washed dishes, arms suddenly circled his waist from behind. His hands kept scrubbing, but his heartbeat stuttered.

Clearing his throat, he teased, “Never knew you were this clingy.”

He felt the hand around his waist pause, followed by Pamela’s shy voice.

“Back then we were just classmates, childhood sweethearts at best.”

Just as she finished speaking, Scott finished washing the bowl.

He peeled off the rubber gloves, turned and wrapped his arms around Pamela, gazing down at her.

Scott demanded in a low voice: “Then what are we now?”
