Chapter 10

Scott’s mind exploded.

He avoided the portrait and shut the door again.

“Aunt Anna, I should get going. I’ll visit another time.”

Without another word, Scott strode away.

A sudden emptiness washed over him.

Every street and alley flickered with Pamela’s silhouette-

only to dissolve like mist when he blinked.

He refused to believe someone so vibrant could vanish overnight.

Gritting his teeth, he asked passersby for directions.

By sunset, he found the riverside park she’d described.

Finding this place proved he’d find her too.

Golden hour painted the park with crowds enjoying the scenery.

Everything seemed perfect.

Only Scott felt the crushing absence.

This moment would’ve sparkled if Pamela were here.

But she’d broken their promise.

Alone on a stone bench,

he watched amber ripples dance across the river.

An elderly couple approached, arms linked like newlyweds.

The woman peered at his haggard face with concern.

“Young man, heartbreak isn’t worth drowning over!”

Her husband gently patted her hand, chiding,

“Forgive her folks have jumped after losing jobs or lovers here.”

Scott forced a smile. “Just trying to win back my girl.”

As the skeptical pair wandered off,

their bickering floated back:

“Since when did my cynical wife turn do-gooder?”

“Every life saved builds a sacred monument!”

Scott’s chuckle died in his throat.

Night fell. He’d lost track of hours when thinning crowds signaled departure.

Instead of staying, he drove straight back to Blood Pack.

In his predawn bedroom,

Pamela’s dark window stared back from across the street.

He gazed at it, trying to drift off-

just as her light flickered on.
