Chapter 4

Chapter 4

He looked so pleased with himself, like he was doing me some huge favor with his promises.

3ut watching him felt like seeing a monkey show-completely baffling.

Bring me along?

The second his plane touched down overseas, I’d probably get a breakup text.

Next time, install a keypad lock on my door. I’m sick of random people just walking in here uninvited.”

After giving my assistant instructions, I looked up at Jaxon.

Put up with what exactly?”

Are you asking me to stick around so I can spread the word about what a cheating piece of shit you are?”

I told you, I didn’t CHEAT!”

‘d noticed that whenever I used that word, Jaxon completely lost it.

f he’d just been straight up about ditching me to climb the social ladder, I might’ve respected his honesty.

his pathetic act just made me sick.

No cheating? Just dozens of hotel stays with Bella over six months, and scoping out a love nest abroad last

veek.” I smiled sweetly.

Jaxon, you really think you can bullshit ME with that smooth brain of yours?”

fis face went ugly fast.

de hadn’t expected me to dig that deep.

Tine, Victoria. If this is how you want to end things, whatever.” He suddenly switched to a threatening tone.

“Yeah, I started getting close to Bella for the connection, but spending time with her? She’s SO much better than you.”

“You’re just making me realize I don’t mind making this thing with her real. And you…” He puffed up with

arrogance:

“Next time you want to see me at headquarters, you’ll be knocking on MY door.”

Chapter 4

“Don’t come crying to me later.”

I watched him walk away and just smiled.

After Christmas, headquarters finally sent both VPs invites to the going away party for the tech director who was transferring out.

Everyone knew this dinner would basically announce who was taking over.

When I walked into the venue, Jaxon was working the room with Bella on his arm, all smiles and smooth

alk.

Meanwhile, the other VP, Claire Morrison, stood off to the side with hardly anyone around her, looking

retty isolated.

What the hell are YOU doing here!”

axon finally spotted me and nearly crushed his wine glass.

calmly made small talk with the executives, completely ignoring his outburst.

A few days before flying out, he’d texted me some dramatic goodbye message about heading overseas and

ever seeing me again, telling me to “move on.”

le really thought my plane ticket was just for show.

ella’s face went sour too, but she whispered something to Jaxon that seemed to calm him down. Soon he vas back to looking smug as hell.

The dinner started, and since I outranked Jaxon, I naturally got seated closer to the head table.

After a few drinks, the departing director finally brought up the topic, grinning: “So have we decided who’s wetting promoted to headquarters? Someone to replace me, or are we promoting internally and bringing in

resh talent?”

azon went rigid.

Something fell off to him.

Could Victoria actually have the pull to compete with him…

He sat up straight, nervous, then heard the general manager’s voice:

“Obviously we prioritize tech talent. We’ve got two great candidates this year.” The GM smiled at me.

“Plus, with the chairman’s daughter running things at the domestic office-she’s been there long enough to

have a good eye for talent. These two candidates were her recommendations.”

“How about it, Victoria? Found some good people for your dad?”

CRASH!

The sound of Jaxon’s wine glass shattering filled the air.

He’d gotten it backwards.

wasn’t competing with him.

was the one deciding his future.

smiled and nodded at the manager:

All set, Dad’s already approved.”
