I’d rarely used this tone with him in our six years together. 

I remembered when he first joined the company-I was already leading a project team, known for being efficient and keeping work and personal life separate. 

Back then, he’d hold me and laugh, saying others only saw the surface, but he was the only one who got to see my soft, loving side. 

From college until now, I’d given him way too much of that softness. 

But the more I gave, the more he seemed to take it for granted.

“Victoria, you!” His face flushed with embarrassment, but when he saw my completely unaffected expression, he went quiet. 

My face showed zero trace of hurt. 

I looked like I was tossing out worthless trash without a second thought. 

I knew exactly what he was thinking. He was pissed and humiliated that I didn’t give a damn. 

“Don’t you get that everything I’ve been doing-getting close to her, playing nice-was for US?” He held back for a moment, then slowly ground out the words: 

I can put up with this temporarily for OUR future, but you’re being petty about every little thing.” 

Victoria, you’re way too controlling.” He stared me down. 

It’s just a private account, a few lines for show, and you’re grilling me like this.” 

He seemed desperate to save face, trying to get a rise out of me. 

Every word painted me as some paranoid, unsupportive partner who couldn’t appreciate her man’s 

acrifices. 

While he was the long-suffering hero, making noble compromises. 

Too bad for him-that act didn’t work on me. 

Reasonable” had never been in my vocabulary anyway.

So with the wind howling outside and Jaxon cursing up a storm, my place finally went quiet at 3 AM, 

To avoid office gossip about dating a coworker, Jaxon had never made our relationship public from day one. 

I used to think I understood lus concerns, but now valid it was just because he’d never seen me as his only option 

After all, three days after I dumped him, Jason and Belle started showing up everywhere together, not even trying to hide it.

I stared at this piece of evidence from our dead relationship and sighed, about to put it away when Bella pushed through my door. 

Director Blackwell, sorry, I think there’s been a mix-up with a candy delivery.”
