Chapter 5 When Rivals Meet, Tension Flares 

A wolf ahead, a tiger closing in from behind. 

Clenching my jaw, I attempted to move sideways. 

But Eric caught hold of my arm. 

“The Daglesh family’s men are swarming outside. Where do you think you can escape to?” 

It was over. Eric had gone to extreme lengths to trap me. 

I lowered my head in exasperation. 

“Eric, I’m not your employee anymore. We have nothing between us now.” 

The grip on my arm became firmer. 

“You know the company’s secrets. I won’t let you walk away that easily. Come back with me. 

“If you’re upset about me reassigning you, Oliver can go. You can return and be my secretary once more.” 

In polite terms, it was a secretary position. But let’s be real–it meant being his office lover. 

Eric’s eyes held a chilling, icy gaze. 

A chill seemed to seep through him, radiating from within. 

I knew that he was furious. 

“Who gave you permission to lay a hand on my woman?” 

Samuel grabbed Eric’s wrist, grinning even as the veins on his hand stood out prominently. 

“Remove your filthy hands!” 

Eric scowled and withdrew his hand. 

Samuel stood in the underworld, his hold anything but usual. 

Eric resisted slightly against him. 

“Your… woman?” 

Eric questioned in a slow, deliberate voice. 

Samuel moved to stand before me. Their eyes locked in a standoff, neither ready to yield.

A subtle scent of gunpowder still hung in the air. 

“I wasn’t aware Mr. Kerrich had a secret lover. If your foes discovered this, wouldn’t that…” 

“You dare to threaten me? If anything happens to Amanda, the Daglesh family will be the first to face my wrath. 

Years ago, Eric and Samuel clashed over a piece of land. 

Ever since, they had been enemies, quarreling whenever their paths crossed. 

I silently prayed within myself, urging, “Fight, fight.” 

I inched forward, poised to dash away the moment I got the chance. 

“Amanda, you certainly have a wide array of ‘businesses,‘ don’t you?” 

“Sweetheart, it appears you share a rather close bond with this scoundrel?” 

They both turned to look at me at the same time. 

I stood still, afraid to move. 

Back when I was Eric’s secretary, I had promised him I wouldn’t get involved with other men. 

However, Samuel was incredibly generous! 

He was charming, talented, and had a knack for making people feel good–who wouldn’t be drawn to that? 

“You’d better give me an explanation.” 

“Sweetheart, so you’ve been lying to me all this time.” 

They were the first to break their promises, and now they’re accusing me. 

I tightened my fists. 

“That’s enough! 

“We’re done, aren’t we?” 

With the return of their beloved, whatever existed between me and these two men was finished. 

“Karen’s back, and our agreement from before ends now,” I told Eric.

I had agreed to act as his secretary until Karen returned from abroad–he promised to let me go once she was back. 

So why was he reneging on that promise now? 

“And you weren’t you dishonest with me from the very beginning?” 

The night I accidentally bumped into Samuel, he was clearly taken aback by how much I resembled Karen, at least 80%. From that point on, he pursued me persistently.

Yet, he never said anything about it, insisting instead that he fell for me at first sight and that I was the only one he’d ever love. 

“That night, you held me and said we were over. So what’s this all about now?” 

Samuel hesitated, “I… I didn’t mean it.” 

“Is it possible that you want Karen, but can’t stand the thought of losing me, your stand–in?” 

Samuel’s face lost all color. 

“Sweetheart, you misunderstand. You’re not a stand–in! Did you even read the letter I left for you?” 

Of course, I didn’t read it. It had been torn to pieces long ago. Not that I cared about what it said. 

“Samuel, weren’t you just getting into my bed because of my looks?” 

Samuel had no response, unable to deny the truth. 

Eric’s face stayed the same, showing no hint of remorse for not keeping his word. 

“I told you, you have to come with me today.” 

Eric gestured to the Daglesh family members standing close by to escort me away. 

“No!” Samuel protested. 

“That’s not up to you.” 

Eric had arrived with men from the Daglesh family, while Samuel was by himself, trying in vain to fight back. 

I was left with no option but to be forcibly taken away by Eric. 

“Eric, you jerk! You can’t just kidnap me and take away my freedom!” 

I continued to shout at him the entire time. 

“I told you, to stop you from leaking company secrets, I need to monitor you closely.” 

Eric brought me back to the Daglesh’s residence.
