Chapter 3 

Mom texted me: 

[Mom knows everything. No matter how desperate you were for money, you shouldn’t have done those things.] 

[Thank God Rayna told us, or you would’ve gone completely astray.] 

[Here’s the money. If it’s not enough, ask Mom and Dad for more.] 

[Mom and Dad still love you] 

I stared at those words and laughed softly. 

Then I sent the five thousand back. 

I was done having ANY connection to this family. 

After getting some rest and sleep, I could go make money again. 

Finding another job that well–paying would be tough, but I believed I had other options. 

I was gonna work in a different city, cutting off any chance they had to interfere. 

When they got home, I was packing my bags. 

My brother looked at me and laughed dismissively: 

“Quit packing. Rayna’s coming–of–age trip isn’t gonna include you.” 

I paused and looked up. “Coming–of–age trip?” 

“Hah, don’t play dumb. How could you NOT know about Rayna’s eighteen–country world tour? I know you wanna go, but look at what you’ve done. You think you deserve it?” 

Something felt off. “Does she get a world trip for every birthday?” 

Mom looked uncomfortable: 

“Well… you just got back not that long ago, so… otherwise you’d have one too.” 

I didn’t say anything. 

They seemed to have forgotten–I’d been back for five years. 

Not “not that long ago.” 

But I’d never even gotten a birthday cake. 

Every time Rayna had a birthday, they forgot we shared the same day. 

When I occasionally heard about Rayna’s trips, I’d beg Mom and Dad to take me along.

They finally gave me a chance. 

But dumped me in a war zone… 

Past life memories flooded back as I packed faster. 

“We already said you’re NOT going! What are you even doing?” 

My brother tried to grab me impatiently. 

Rayna quickly stopped him: 

“It’s okay, Jax. If Harper wants to come, let her. I don’t mind.” 

“After all… Harper’s the real family member…” 

Her eyes reddened as she spoke, but she smiled bravely. 

Jaxon’s eyes immediately filled with protective concern. 

“Don’t worry.” 

He pulled her into his arms gently. “You’ll always be my only sister.” 

Rayna shook her head tearfully. “Jax, don’t try to make me feel better…” 

“I can swear to you.” 

Jaxon looked at her seriously. “Harper’s got no potential. When you get back from your trip, Mom and Dad will give you half the company shares.” 

Rayna burst into happy tears, then threw her arms around Jaxon. 

His body went rigid. 

In that moment, I saw unmistakable desire in his eyes. 

“Since Rayna said yes, you can tag along.” 

“But don’t get near her. I’ll be with her the whole time, got it?” 

Jaxon gave me cold orders. 

I nodded and kept packing. 

Of course I wouldn’t get close to her. 

We weren’t taking the same route anyway. 

Ten days later, the Mitchell family was packed and ready to leave. 

But they couldn’t find me anywhere. 

“She’s still sleeping upstairs! How is it possible she’s not here?”

Dad was furious. 

The housekeeper looked awkward. “Actually… the young miss hasn’t been back for ten days.” 

“WHAT?!” 

Mom frowned. “That’s impossible!” 

She was first to burst into my bedroom. 

Everything was neat and tidy, all personal items gone. 

Dust had settled on the desk–no signs of life at all. 

“That little bitch! She’s definitely throwing a tantrum because we yelled at her last time!” 

Dad was livid. “She screwed up first and SHE’S got the nerve to be mad?!” 

Mom was equally frustrated. “We gave her money and said we’d take her traveling–what more does she want?” 

Jaxon sneered: 

“She’s probably playing disappearing act, waiting for us to find her. How childish.” 

“Ungrateful brat!” 

Mom turned to leave immediately: 

“Fine, let her play games! Like we’d actually delay our trip for HER?” 

The four of them turned to leave without a care. 

But Jaxon accidentally bumped the desk corner. A stack of books wobbled and fell to the floor. 

A paper and envelope scattered out. 

He picked them up, confused. 

Then the shocking title hit him- 

LETTER OF DISOWNMENT] 

He quickly opened the envelope. 

nside was an itemized bill of everything between me and the Mitchell family over five years, totaling seven thousand eight undred sixty–two dollars and forty–one cents. 

Ma’am!” 

The accountant came running breathlessly: 

That five thousand you had me transfer to the young miss–it was sent back.”
