Chapter 6
Over the next few days, he seemed to forget all about me cracking his head at the nightclub.
He started treating me like back when we were kids-all intense and caring.
He’d check out new movies and take me to try whatever the chef was cooking up,
In public, he was super obvious about showing me off.
One time when we were driving, he suddenly slammed on the brakes.
I lurched forward-would’ve smacked my head if I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt.
I looked over at Marcus, but he was staring across the street at the mall entrance.
A low-key car’s sitting there, but its smooth lines could say it ain’t cheap.
Amanda was all smiles, getting into the car while some guy helped her.
Staff behind them were loading a bunch of designer shopping bags into the trunk.
The car started up, and Marcus lost it-yanked the wheel and followed them.
His face went dark, and I’d never seen him look so pissed.
The veins on his skinny hands were popping out.
It was like he forgot I was even in the car.
Marcus tailed them until they stopped near some run-down apartment building.
Some curious people were sticking their heads out the windows, staring at this fancy car that just popped up.
Amanda got out and waved goodbye all shy-like.
When the driver tried to give her those bags, Amanda shook her head, looking shocked.
Don’t know what the guy in the car said, but she bit her lip and looked up at the car from below.
She made herself look so small and helpless, like she was being judged.
After more talking, Amanda smiled and bowed to him.
Marcus couldn’t take it anymore-jumped out and stormed over.
I just sat there watching like it was some movie.
Marcus started beating the crap out of the guy.
Two guys in suits going at it over some girl.
Amanda was freaking out, trying to break it up.
But even then, she never let go of those shopping bags.
That just made Marcus even more pissed off.
Yeah, he was the Sinclair golden boy who always got everything handed to him.
Whatever he wants-when hasn’t he gotten it?
Hell, even someone like me who hates people ended up marrying him, right?
But Amanda was the one thing he couldn’t have-the obsession keeping him up at night.
No way he was gonna let someone else have her now.
Amanda was scared out of her mind and started crying beside.
That’s when the two guys finally let go of each other and rushed to comfort her-
Then Amanda just slapped Marcus right across the face.
He stood there in shock, couldn’t believe what just happened.
If it wasn’t for that wedding ring still on his finger, I might’ve actually gotten caught up in their whole dramatic love story.
Marcus was only stunned for like a second. Then he grabbed Amanda and pulled her into his arms, ignoring how much she was fighting it.
That’s when Amanda finally let go of all those shopping bags.
Both hands went to Marcus’s face, his body.
She was sobbing her heart out-loud and raw.
You’re such an idiot, Marcus! I hate you, I hate you so much!
You married your precious perfect girl, so why can’t you just leave me alone? You just think I’m easy to mess with, think I can’t live without you.”
Her broken voice was the kind that just gets to you.
Marcus’s eyes were turning red.
Amanda was crying so damn hard.
Like she was getting out every bit of hurt from the past two years.
The guy who’d been buying her stuff just stood there looking lost, all helpless and sad.
Between the two of them, he was the outsider. Same as me.
I got out and moved to the driver’s seat.
Marcus had been so freaked out he’d left the keys right there.
started her up and peeled out of there fast.
When I drove past Marcus, I caught him suddenly snapping back to reality.
His eyes narrowed all of a sudden, but he didn’t chase after me.
Amanda was still in his arms.
He just stood there staring-staring as I drove off in his car.
Until I was completely out of his sight.
