Chapter 18

She asked, her voice trembling slightly, “Ellsworth, did you kiss

the wrong person?”

Hearing this, he immediately lost all interest.

He pulled away, turned on the main light, and lit a cigarette.

She quickly sat up and fastened her buttons.

Standing next to the floor-to-ceiling window, he turned back to

glance at her.

She was … no fun.

Shortly after, he walked over to the coffee table and stubbed

out the cigarette. Then he took out a shirt and a suit jacket from

the closet and changed into them casually.

She tilted her face away, which didn’t escape his notice. With a

sneer, he asked, “So bashful, huh?”

She looked up at him and said nothing.

He beckoned her. “Come here.”

over.

Stopping in front of him, she asked, “Do you want me to help

with your tie?”

Amused, he said, “It’s the middle of the night. Why would I need

that?”

Saying this, he stuffed his belt into her hand. “Put this on for

me.”

She looked down at the tie in her hand, her ears reddening.

Without saying a word, she carefully fastened it around his

waist.

But she had never done this before and was so clumsy, either

fastening it too loosely or too tightly.

She couldn’t help but blush after a few minutes.

The tension had become so dangerously intimate that her

imagination had run wild.

Ellsworth looked down. At the sight of her heated cheeks, he

deliberately laughed loudly. “Since when did belts make people

blush?”

Hearing this, she instinctively looked up at him and quickly

averted her gaze. Changing the subject, she asked, “Are you

stepping out? If Patsy sees you, she might be mad.”

He smiled roguishly, “Is this your way of begging me not to

leave?”

She said softly, “I’m just reminding you.”

Begging him not to leave?

No matter what she did, she couldn’t keep him around. Besides,

she was past that phase.

Sensing her shyness, he pinched her chin and forced her to

meet his gaze. “Say it. Say that you don’t want me to leave. Then

I’ll consider staying.”

Looking at him unwillingly, she said, “If you leave, Patsy will

give you an earful.”

He smiled, not loosening his grip, “Harriet, what happened to

that feisty little minx who seduced me before?”

She blushed even more, looking away in panic. “I … was too

immature back then.”

Suddenly, he carried her onto his shoulder.

Flustered, she let out a cry. “Ellsworth! What are you doing? Let

me down.”

Ignoring her resistance, he threw her onto the bed.

It was so soft that she sank into it at once.

As she tried to prop herself up, he pinned her wrists and

trapped her in his arms.

She struggled a few times.

But she soon stopped because the more she struggled, the

greater force he exerted.

Giving up, she closed her eyes and tilted her head away,

refusing to look at him.

He asked, “I’m gonna ask you again. Are you sure about the

divorce? You sure you don’t wanna stay with me anymore?”

She nodded, still averting her face. “Yes. I’m sure.”

Hearing this, he immediately loosened his grip and pulled

himself away.

He had given her plenty of chances tonight already.

Unfortunately, she didn’t cherish any of them.

Harriet opened her eyes when she heard the door slam shut.

She sat up in bed, and Ellsworth was long gone.

Once again, she was alone in the room.

Her hair was already a mess. She stared at the door, lost in

thought for a long time.

Morning light began filtering in when she calmed down and

pulled herself together.

She picked up her phone and saw it was already 6:30a.m.

It was such an awkward time. She gave up on sleeping, putting

her phone down, and got up.
