Chapter 8Â
He stops without turning around, showing me his back.Â
“If you need something-like real food-I can get it for you and Fatih, as a thank you for defending me.”Â
Without even turning, I see his fists clenched tight. I immediately regret what I said.Â
“Don’t use my name-we’re not friends. And neither Fatih nor I need your pity. We’re not beggars sucking up to a guard for privileges. Don’t ever say that shit again.”Â
He just crushed me in seconds-and continues:Â
“I didn’t defend you. I defended Fatih because he’s an elder and I respect him. If he hadn’t stepped in, I would’ve let your colleague keep going.”Â
What a bastard.Â
I clench my fists and bite my lip to avoid screaming. I really tried to be kind, but he didn’t deserve it.Â
“Jackass.”Â
In a split second, I’m slammed against the wall by the sheer force of this criminal. He pins me hard against the concrete. I can’t move, and he stares daggers at me.Â
“That’s the last time you insult me unless you want to end up dead like a stray bitch. I’m letting it go now because I don’t hit women-but try me again, and I won’t hesitate.”Â
“Let me go. Now.”Â
My back hurts like hell under his weight, but I don’t let it show.Â
“Stupid bitch.”Â
He releases me, puts his hands in his pockets, and storms out, slamming the door behind him.Â
I straighten up and adjust my uniform.Â
He hurt me, that asshole. I was thrown against the wall, and it didn’t even seem like he used full strength. I really can’t afford to underestimate him. That would be a huge mistake.Â
I head toward the shower exit after catching my breath.Â
As soon as I step out, I’m slammed against a wall again. I hold back a groan of pain.Â
For a second, I thought it was Alexander coming back for more, but it’s not him-it’s that idiot Anis.Â
He scolds me for the time I spent in the showers with Alexander, but I ignore him. When he sees I’m shutting down the conversation, he orders me to go fetch meat like I’m his damn servant.Â
I don’t feel like fighting him. I can’t afford more problems. I already have Alexander on my back, and now Franck and AnisÂ
too.Â
“That’s an order, so do it without complaining. Unless you want me to go complain to the director?”Â
I groan in frustration and give in.Â
I need to keep a low profile. Anis could raise doubts with the director, and he’d quickly find out I’m not a real guard.Â

Chapter 8Â
“I thought so. Take one of the inmates with you to help. With your body, you’ll probably get crushed by the meat. Better not poison the food either.”Â
I don’t respond to his comment. I turn around and head toward the yard.Â
When I get there, the inmates are on their break. Mathieu waves at me and I walk over to him.Â
“You took your time.”Â
“Anis held me up. He wants me to go to the cold room and get some meat.”Â
“Why did he ask you?”Â
“Because he’s trying to drive me insane. And he wants me to take an inmate with me.”Â
“I’d come with you, but I’m on duty.”Â
“Don’t worry.”Â
“Who are you taking? Be careful, he might try something.”Â
I let out a small smile. It would take guts to try anything surrounded by guards.Â
I start scanning the yard for someone to take with me.Â
My eyes settle on Alexander, leaning against a wall, hands in his pockets. His brow is furrowed, his gaze hard, completely devoid of emotion.Â
“Found him. Just tell me where the cold room is.”Â
I head toward the secluded corner where Alexander stands. As I approach, he clenches his jaw.Â
“What the hell do you want now?”Â
“You’re coming with me to get meat from the cold room.”Â
“I’m not your dog. Figure it out yourself or take one of those horny dudes drooling over you!”Â
As if I was thrilled to ask him.Â
“You don’t have a choice. I picked you.”Â
“Don’t piss me off.”Â
How can this jerk radiate so much arrogance?Â
“If you come with me, when I have to do cell checks, I’ll make sure I don’t ‘see’ anything in yours. If you don’t want that perk, I can help Fatih instead.”Â
He raises his eyebrows, staring at me, probably surprised by the offer.Â
“What makes you think I have anything to hide?”Â
“I know you’ve got a phone. Your empire doesn’t run itself. Think about Fatih. He’s old, prison life must be hard on him.”Â
He keeps staring, then gives me a once-over before walking toward the building entrance. I take that as a yes and follow him, holding back a small smile.Â
Not bad for a “tight little virgin,” huh?Â

Chapter 8Â
He seems to know the way to the cold room, taking the lead.Â
We enter quickly.Â
“It’s obvious you’re not a real guard. Hope you know that-your cover sucks.”Â
I raise an eyebrow.Â
“Still with that theory that the director sent me to trick you? Believe what you want. I don’t need to prove anything.”Â
“I’ve never seen a guard let one of the most dangerous inmates walk free without cuffs. The others know I’m not a threat unless provoked. But you? You don’t know me.”Â
Shit, I am an idiot.Â
“If you wanted to escape, you would’ve done it before I even got here.”Â
“Don’t think you can mess with my head. You’re not a guard, and I can see it in your eyes. Your hands are dirty-very dirty.”Â
I don’t answer.Â
We’re grabbing the meat when a loud noise echoes.Â
We both turn and realize in horror that the cold room door just slammed shut on us. I’m the only one reacting-Alexander, as usual, stays completely unfazed.Â
I drop the meat I was holding and rush to the door, trying to open it, but it’s no use.Â
I bang on it and shout, but it’s pointless.Â
I turn to Alexander, now leaning against the wall.Â
“You could at least pretend to be worried! We’re going to freeze to death!”Â
“Screaming and panicking won’t help. So shut the hell up and sit in a corner like a good girl until someone opens the door.”Â
I face him, challenging him with my eyes. I can’t stand this man or his attitude.Â
“Don’t talk to me like that. I’ve put up with your shitty comments since we met-so cut it out already.”Â
“And if I don’t? What then?”Â
I exhale in anger and pull my gun from the back pocket of my jeans.Â
I turn to the door.Â
There’s no way I’m staying locked in this ice box with him for who knows how long.Â
“What are you gonna do? Shoot the door? You think that’ll work?”Â
I ignore him and focus on the lock. I take a deep breath and shoot.Â
The bullet hits the lock. I rush to the door and try to open it-but it stays shut.Â
We were locked in on purpose, no doubt. If it were an accident, the lock would’ve been blown off.Â
“Where’d you learn to shoot like that?”Â
His question sounds like an accusation. He must find it strange how well I can aim. Even if I said it was training from a guardÂ

academy, he wouldn’t buy it. Better to stay silent.Â
I sit down in a corner, shivering, while he remains standing.Â
He’s less dressed than I am-just his inmate uniform-while I still have my full guard gear.Â
“And of course, I left my phone in the locker room. Whoever did this, I’m going to kill them. Rip their bones apart one byÂ
one.”Â
“Aren’t people like you supposed to protect lives and all that other bullshit?”Â
He gives me a mocking smile.Â
He knows I’m not a real guard. I can tell he’s sure now-but he still doesn’t know why I’m here.Â
Could be worse.Â
