Chapter 20

For nights, the villa remained brightly lit until dawn. 

Ashley thought it odd but didn’t ask. 

That evening, drifting into sleep, she heard her bedroom door creak open. 

Yet she always locked it. 

Ashley was startled, wanting to get up but couldn’t open her eyes no matter what. 

In her groggy state, she heard a soft chuckle. 

“Sis, long time no see.” 

When that heavy feeling finally faded, Ashley found herself tied to the bed, Rui right beside her, suffering the same 

treatment. 

“Nicole, what are you trying to do!” 

“What you did to me, I’m doing to you.” Nicole sat on a chair, playing with a knife. 

The blade gleamed coldly, its reflection on her pale face was terrifying. 

Ashley broke down: “Your mess with Aaron, don’t drag Rui and me into it! He deceived me for so many years, who will speak up for me!” 

Nicole paused, “Deceived you? What do you mean?” 

Ashley sneered. 

“Are you really clueless, or just pretending? Aaron has always liked you. He only pursued me to make you back off! Marrying me was just settling!” 

Nicole kept staring blankly, then a twisted smile actually spread across her face. 

Then she frowned and shook her head. 

“You’re lying. My brother truly loved you when he chased you. He only started liking me again after I came back to the country. Are you scared of dying?” 

Ashley said, “Bottom drawer on the right side of the walk-in closet, against the wall. His diary’s there. See for your- self.” 

Nicole studied her expression for a full minute before finally getting up and heading to the walk-in closet. 

 

A solid half hour later, she returned wearing an utterly satisfied smile, tear tracks still visible. 

She looked at the two figures on the bed, one big and one small, seemingly pondering how to handle them. 

“Why did you come back?” 

Ashley mocked: “Not by choice. I divorced your brother ages ago. He’s the one begging for reconciliation. When I stood by him, you were all he could see. I stepped aside for you, and now he pretends to care for me. Don’t you find that ridiculous?” 

Nicole gazed out the window, lost in thought. 

After a long silence, she finally spoke: “He’s a coward. A spineless man.” 

Her eyes slowly shifted to Ashley’s face. Suddenly, she smiled and whispered: “Ashley, I have a present for you.” 

Alarm bells went off in Ashley’s mind, but she only saw Nicole turn and leave the room with light steps. 

Ashley didn’t have the strength to call for help until late at night when the drug effects wore off completely. 

The maid downstairs quickly came up to untie her, and Ashley immediately called the police. 

Just as she hung up, a maid suddenly screamed: “There’s a dead body!” 

When the police arrived, Aaron was already dead. 

He’d been tied to the bed and died from a stab wound to the heart – a homicide. 

Nicole lying beside him had died the same way, but by suicide. 

The quiet villa district remained noisy throughout the night. 

At dawn, Ashley left the police station, staring teary-eyed at the sky. 

She remembered the day Aaron had confessed his feelings – just like this beautiful morning with its brilliant blue sky and dazzling sunlight. 

Back then, Ashley never imagined she’d marry this dull man she disliked.. 

Nor did she dream things would spiral so badly between them that she’d end up burying him. 

Ashley wiped a tear from her eye, quickly settled affairs, and took Ray to Australia. 

Bruce drove to the airport to meet them. 

Ray saw him and kicked his legs like windmills, beaming with joy. 

Bruce scooped the boy up with one arm, effortlessly pulling Ashley close with the other. 

This embrace felt warm and solid. 

 

Their happiness was just beginning.
