Chapter 25

TESSA

Noticing my presence,my mom turned around.

“Oh..hello,my dear.”

I forced a smile out of me and moved closer to her.

“Is your boss yet to get back to you about…you know.”My mom probed.

I slowly sat beside her.

“Well,he did.”

“And?”

“He suggested we got married.”

“What?”

“And I agreed.I even signed the marriage certificate today.”I slowly brought out the paper and stretched it to her.

She frowned.

“Why would you?I mean…How? Marriage is a big deal. You can’t rush into it like this.”

“I just thought it would be better if the child wasn’t referred to as illegitimate…”

“But…do you even know this guy?”

Wanting to convince her,I nodded.

“How old is he?”

I had seen his birth certificate at the courthouse.

He was four years older than me.

“Twenty-nine.”

“What’s his personality like? What’s his parents like?”

“I em…I’ll get to know about his family with time but Declan is nice and considerate.” I let out.

It wasn’t all lies.

Sometimes he’s nice and considerate.

“Oh… I would have been thrilled if things had worked out between you and Edgar. He really cares about you”

Oh Edgar…

Even if we were just friends…I know telling him that I’m pregnant with another man’s child would hurt him.

“Mom. I know you’re very much against a loveless marriage but I kinda feel good about this. This child would get to live a very good life and who knows…we might end up falling for each other.”

She was quiet for a while.

I knew this was very hard for her to accept.”Who on earth gets married without their parents’ consent?I need to see him tomorrow.I need to make sure he’s okay for you before I can give you two my blessings.

No!

They can’t meet just yet…..

I’m not even prepared to have Declan face my mom yet.

And I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t want to come either.

“Uhm well,I don’t think he can make it tomorrow. He’s leaving for a business trip tomorrow morning.”

“When will he be back?”

“Let’s say in two weeks time.”

“I do not like men who are always so busy.”

“He’s not always so busy,”

“Well, you can inform him that I want to see him when he gets back.”With that, she stood up and walked away.

“Oh my!I can’t believe I’m going to be an Aunt.”Ashley cooed turning away from her books to face me.

I leaned against the couch.

“I guess mom didn’t want to tell you.Dad called today, he knows about your pregnancy and I guess he said something unpleasant to mom because she cried.”

I scoffed.

Anna must have told him about it.

“Why can’t they leave us alone?”I murmured.

The next day,I spent a few hundreds of dollars on a ring.

I knew I wouldn’t able to stop more tongues from waggling about my pregnancy so it was best to let them know that I’m married now and this wasn’t so abominable anymore.

When I got to the company,I made sure to flaunt my ring finger and soon they were all around me asking if that was indeed a wedding ring.

‘I got married yesterday and it was a simple court wedding but when the main wedding ceremony is held,I will make sure to invite you all.”I bragged.

‘What does your husband do?”Fabiola asked.

I couldn’t bring myself to say that he was our boss and have them chop my head off.

‘He’s an employee in a company.”

“Oh.”That was some of their responses.

But the look of disgust they’ve been giving me ever since I fell pregnant had suddenly changed to sympathy.

I heard some of them whispering.

“A man who can hold a wedding ceremony?”

“I can’t marry someone who’s that poor.”

It might be true love.?

Although I wasn’t comfortable with the sympathetic looks but it was better than contempt.

Later that day,Audrey and I walked over to the hallway.

We stood close to the window.

“Are you really married?Or you just said that to make them,..”

“I’m married. “I confessed and then I told Audrey everything that transpired yesterday.

‘Damn, you’re so lucky.girl.”

‘As if. Declan is practical about everything.I mean,I thought things might change a bit when we get married but he hasn’t even given me a call and he isn’t saying 10w our marriage life is going to be from now on. This isn’t a regular marriage at all.”

If I were in your shoes,I would try to enjoy everything about him…especially his cash… I won’t overthink anything, my dear…money solves everything.”

stared at her in dismay.

he has no idea how dreadful this feels.
