Chapter 4 

Even though I had chosen a wedding dress that was easy to move in, it was still difficult to walk on the track in high heels. 

I finally managed to reach Marcus’s side. He was animatedly chatting with Annie. 

The groom’s jacket was casually thrown on the ground. 

When his gaze fell on me, his brows visibly furrowed. 

It seemed he was afraid I might say something to expose our relationship in front of Annie. 

He hurriedly said: 

“Why did you come over here? I’m just chatting with my classmate for a bit.” 

My expression froze, and I forced a smile. 

“There’s something at the company I didn’t finish. I need to go back. I didn’t bring my phone in the wedding dress, so I had to come over to tell you.” 

A flash of surprise crossed his eyes. 

In the past, I would have definitely shown my displeasure, but this time I didn’t say anything more, not wanting to be an eyesore in front of him. 

His expression softened, and he nodded without saying a word. 

I turned around and hobbled away, each step awkward in my heels. 

The voices behind me gradually became indistinct. 

“Don’t misunderstand, it’s just an ad for a wedding dress shop. They insisted on having me take photos with her…” 

I hadn’t lied. After returning, I spent the whole day at the company handing over my work. 

When I got home in the evening, he unexpectedly had dinner prepared and was waiting for me. 

Seeing me come in, he immediately put away his phone, his expression a bit unnatural. 

“You’re back. Why so late today? Dinner’s ready. This morning I noticed you looked thinner in the wedding dress…” 

I paused for a moment at the door. 

Had I gotten thinner? 

It seemed I hadn’t eaten much since seeing those photos. 

Now, looking at the table full of greasy dishes, I frowned. 

“You eat. I don’t have an appetite. I’m going to rest.” 

As I turned, the wound on my ankle where the high heels had rubbed the skin raw was exposed to Marcus’s view. 

I had just entered the bedroom when he walked in with a first aid kit. 

In my memory, this seemed to be the first time in eight years he had shown concern for me. 

Unfortunately, the wound had already scabbed over, and I no longer needed him. 

I politely declined his kindness, and Marcus’s face darkened. 

He went out again and brought a piece of cake, placing it on the bedside table. 

“I’m sorry. This morning I really didn’t expect her to be at the school. Having known a classmate for so long, I couldn’t just ignore her when we met. 

• Don’t overthink it, I—” 

Before he could finish, I glanced at the cake on the bedside table and interrupted: 

“I’ve been avoiding sugar for a long time now, and I only eat boiled vegetables. You forgot.” 

To be in the best condition for the wedding, I had been living like a monk for nearly a week. 

Yet he paid no attention to this. 

Being together for so long, this was the first time he had lowered his head, only to be repeatedly rejected by me. 

Marcus finally lost his good humor, his expression returning to its usual coldness. 

This time he turned and left the room, not coming back. 

At midnight, my stomach started to growl. 

I got up quietly to get some water, only to see the faint light from his phone screen in the living room. 

The light illuminated Marcus’s face as his fingers rapidly tapped the keyboard, his eyes curved in a smile. 

I remembered how he said he never stayed up late, so he wouldn’t accompany me on New Year’s Eve, and my heart grew colder. 

I didn’t bother getting water, just turned and went back to the bedroom.
