Chapter 6 

Evan’s eyes turned cold, and the lust on his face vanished instantly. 

Claire, clearly annoyed, got up with a huff and walked over to her vanity, reapplying her bold lipstick in defiance. 

She had to stay beautiful–always. 

That was the only way to keep Evan’s attention on her. 

Evan gave her a quick glance, then lowered his voice and walked out. 

Claire frowned, about to chase after him, when something on the bed caught her eye–a memo that had fallen out. 

She opened it with a sneer, but as her eyes scanned the contents, her expression darkened. 

She could tolerate another woman temporarily playing the role of Mrs. Cross. 

But she could never accept that woman being pregnant. 

That would threaten everything. 

In the study, 

Evan sat stiffly, rage barely contained, staring at the divorce papers his lawyer had just emailed. 

The house, the cars, the company, the shares–I don’t want them. 

All I want is money. 

Because raising a child doesn’t just take love. It takes a lot of money. 

He thought about all the times he casually threw money at her to keep her quiet. 

Surely he wouldn’t say no now… 

Evan stared at the screen, his voice sharp as ice: “Where’s Raine Ellis?” 

The lawyer’s tone was distant: 

“Miss Ellis has made it clear–she won’t see you until she agrees to the divorce.” 

Evan let out a dry laugh. 

He never imagined the quiet little kitten he kept at his side would one day bare her claws at him. 

Even less did he expect his silent, obedient wife to leave him so decisively 

“Mr. Cross, in that case, we’ll see you in court.” 

Click. The call ended. 

Evan slammed his hand across the desk, knocking everything onto the floor. 

Then he grabbed his phone and barked at his assistant, Mark: 

“Ten minutes. I want to know where Raine Ellis is.” 

As soon as he hung up, he collapsed back into his chair, head bowed in frustration. 

Claire walked in, tears still sparkling on her face, holding out a crumpled document–the ultrasound report. 

“Evan, you promised me she was just a sham wife. So how the hell is she pregnant?”

Chapter 6 

Evan rubbed his temples, clearly pained.. 

He had thought about giving me a real home, even a child. 

But ever since Claire came back, everything had spiraled out of control. 

Claire’s eyes were red, her lips trembling as she tore the report into pieces and hurled them at Evan. 

“I love you, Evan. But I won’t be the other woman. Do you understand me?” 

Then she stomped her foot and ran out crying. 

Evan instinctively moved to follow her, but as he glanced down at the ultrasound fragments scattered on the floor, his feet froze. 

Claire stood by the door, her hand on the knob, waiting… hoping, 

But Evan said nothing. 

Finally, she slammed the door behind her and left. 

His phone rang. 

Mark’s voice was calm: 

“Mr. Evan Cross, Miss Ellis is at the cemetery.” 

Relief washed over Evan, followed by fury. 

“Tell her to come home and apologize to Claire once she’s done with her tantrum!” 

“And if she dares bring up divorce again, she’ll be the one ruining Claire’s reputation!” 

Mark ended the call, then turned to me with a look full of contempt. 

“Miss Ellis, Mr. Cross says once you’re done with this little drama, go home and apologize to Claire.” 

“This whole divorce thing–he says it’s damaging her image.” 

I looked at my mom’s headstone, her photo forever smiling in that warm, motherly way. 

Softly, I replied, 

“I’m not going back.” 

Mark didn’t even blink, just scoffed and walked off. 

I placed a bouquet of tulips gently at the foot of the grave, brushing the dust off her picture. 

“Mom, I came to say goodbye. I’m leaving Evan.” 

“You don’t have to worry. I have family now.” 

I rested my hand on iny belly and whispered, 

“Even without him, I’ll be okay.“. 

With sunlight on my face and wind in my hair, Ipaid the cemetery’s thirty–year maintenance fee in full, then headed straight for the airport with my luggage in hand.
