When Theo realized something was wrong, the first person he called was Carter. 

The news of Sharon’s disappearance had been deliberately suppressed by Carter, so the Kalen family didn’t discover she was missing until this morning 

Sharon instantly understood what he meant. She didn’t press further, just said, “Thank you.” 

Carter hadn’t hidden the news to take credit for finding her. He’d done it because he feared that if the Kalen family found out, they might use the situation to make Sharon disappear from this world–for good. 

The odds of that happening weren’t high, but it wasn’t impossible. And he couldn’t take that risk. 

Sharon’s tone was soft. “It’s fine. I already made a will. Even if something really happened to me, they wouldn’t get much.” 

She had divided her shares into three parts. 

One went to Theo. Another, to John. And the last, she split in half–between Carter and Xavier. 2 

John was her mother’s student, someone she’d grown up with. She had never doubted him. 

Carter was Theo’s father; she trusted that he would do everything he could for his son. 

But life was unpredictable. If Carter remarried or had another child, things could change. Stepmothers and stepfathers had a way of shifting priorities–no one could foresee what might happen. 

As for Xavier, she owed him a debt she could never repay. When she had fallen into the darkest depths, he had been the one to pull her out–saving her from utter ruin. She believed in his integrity, trusted that he would protect Theo and help keep Carter in check. 1 

As for her personal assets, she divided them differently. Sixty percent to Wendy, forty percent to Thomas. 

In the passenger seat, Thomas sat quietly, his posture relaxed but his brows faintly furrowed, exhaustion still etched between them. His eyes were closed, his breathing even–he looked as though he’d fallen asleep. 

Carter didn’t want to hear Sharon talk about her will any longer. He changed the subject. 

“How did you get bitten by a snake?” 

Sharon gave a brief account of what had happened–how she’d been attacked, what followed. 

When she finished, Carter was silent for a while before asking, “Does it still hurt?” 

“Not much anymore,” she said. “I’m just weak all over. Maybe the bite lowered my immunity–I’ve been feeling sick the past couple of days.” 

Only then did Carter’s tightly strung heart finally ease. 

No wonder she’d gone missing for two days. 

When he first learned that Sharon and Thomas had both disappeared, an absurd thought had crossed his mind:

But he dismissed it almost immediately. 

She had her company here, her friends, her family–her son. There was no way she would abandon all that to elope with Thomas. 1 

Yet, when he saw Thomas carrying her out of the forest, that surge of unease returned. 

From the moment Thomas had appeared by Sharon’s side, he had never hidden his desire for her from others. But in front of her, he played his part with flawless restraint. 

He did his job with precision–never overstepping, never speaking out of turn. Like now, he hadn’t interrupted their conversation, nor had he insisted on sitting beside her. 

He was just her bodyguard. Her assistant. 

He didn’t let her kindness make him presumptuous, didn’t grow bold because she treated him as a friend. 

No one liked an employee who meddled in their boss’s personal affairs, who spoke out of turn. Thomas never made that mistake. 

He always knew exactly when to act and when to stay silent. He seemed to blur boundaries, but somehow, never crossed them. 

He did things that could have been seen as overstepping, yet Sharon never once found him intrusive. 

He was like still water–unassuming, quiet–yet drop by drop, he had seeped into every corner of her life. 

A man like that was terrifying. 

Just then, Sharon’s voice broke through Carter’s thoughts. 

“I really have to thank Thomas,” she said. “He’s been taking care of me these past two days.
