Valerie sighed. “Going public would be such a hassle to explain.” 

Lucius could understand that. When he’d suggested keeping their marriage under wraps, it was to avoid stirring up trouble. His status in Windmere made him a target-news of his marriage would spark endless speculation about his personal life. 

He wasn’t keen on dealing with that mess, either. Not until they were ready for that. 

He said, “I can leave the Woodwards alone for now, but Jay has to die!” A menace like him, who’d repeatedly targeted Valerie’s kidney, didn’t deserve to stay alive. 

Valerie yawned. Her tone carried a hint of reproach as she chided, “How many times have I told you not to mess with other people’s karma? Why can’t you remember that?” 

She knew that Lucius had the means to take Jay out without leaving a trace. The immediate problem would be solved, but he’d have to bear the consequences later. 

Even though she was scolding him, Lucius felt warmth surge in his chest. “Are you worried about me?” 

Valerie rubbed her tired eyes. “Our fates are tied now.” 

He noticed her exhaustion and pulled her to lean against his shoulder. “Why are you so worn 

out?” 

She settled comfortably against him. “It’s probably because I stayed up too late last night.” He brushed loose strands of hair from her forehead. “Hang in there. We’ll be home soon.” 

When they arrived at Azure Bay, Valerie was fast asleep on Lucius’ shoulder. He carefully scooped her up and carried her to the bedroom, his expression so doting that it was like a knife to Hannah’s heart when she saw it. 

For the next days, the Woodwards left Valerie alone. Skyler, too, was as quiet as a mouse. 

Of course, she wasn’t naive enough to think they’d given up. Jay was Skyler’s lifeline —even if he only had a shred of hope left, he would still do whatever he could to save Jay. 

Everett’s warning echoed in Valerie’s ears. The Woodwards were rallying trolls online and were likely planning something big. She was ready to see what cards they would play. 

What she didn’t know was that the Woodwards’ sudden silence was due to Lucius ultimately meddling with them. He hadn’t gone after Skyler directly, but he’d gone after the Woodward

Woodward Group’s core business was in food and beverage, so it was easy enough to create trouble for them via kitchen health violations and staff without proper certifications. The issues piled up, keeping Skyler scrambling. 

Then, something amusing happened. Sonia called Lucius, saying she was still working on Skyler to sell him Serenity Residence. 

Lucius’ expression was almost comical when he heard that. He hadn’t expected her to still be hung up on the property. 

Valerie reminded, “Skyler and his men trashed Serenity Residence, which means he’s already learned from Sonia that the house was transferred. Yet, she’s still hiding the truth from you 

up and begging for more time. What do you think she’s to?” 

Lucius caught on quickly. “She wants to use it to squeeze something out of me.” 

Valerie smirked. “Give her a chance. Let’s see how things play out.” 

Amid the chaos, the first of the month rolled around again. 

Valerie woke up to see the clock reading 6:30 am. She pushed Lucius’ arm off her shoulder to get up, only for him to pull her back down. 

He’d woken the moment she moved. He glanced at the clock and said lazily, “It’s still early. Sleep in for a bit.” 

She stubbornly wriggled free. “No messing around. I’ve got something important to do.” 

“It’s the weekend. You don’t need to be on campus,” he countered. 

Valerie rolled out of bed. “I’ve got a livestream to do. Then, I need to hit the lab.” 

Lucius looked like he’d just heard something interesting. “Wait, you’re an influencer now?”
