Nancy turned her back to Regina and returned her attention to her own company. 

Regina stood frozen in the hallway. She felt as if someone had poured a bucket of ice over her. 

She didn’t even have to turn around to feel the shift in the air. Hayley’s voice lost all of its earlier warmth as she asked, “Regina, what’s that supposed to mean?” 

“Yeah, Regina. Didn’t you say you two had a good relationship? Why did Nancy treat you like a complete stranger?” 

“Honestly, how did you let things get that bad with your own daughter?” 

Regina turned to explain. “There’s a bit of a misunderstanding between us. But no matter what, we’re still mother and daughter. That will never change.” 

“Mother and daughter?” Hayley repeated angrily, feeling scammed. “You do know that mothers and daughters can still end up as enemies these days, right? 

“Regina, what’s wrong with you? With someone as outstanding as her as your daughter, you should 

cherish her!” 

“I…” Regina’s mind went blank. Her lips trembled as she fumbled over her words. 

Hayley grabbed the emerald bracelet she had gifted Regina earlier and yanked it off Regina’s wrist. It made the latter’s hand sting. 

With an icy look, Hayley said, “Don’t blame me for being blunt, but if you can’t even get along with your daughter, then there’s nothing between us worth keeping either.” 

“She’s right! How can you be so short–sighted at your age, Regina?” 

“You social climbers need connections with families like the Hawthornes to stay relevant. Don’t you get that?” 

The same women who had been fawning over Regina minutes ago were now sneering and shaking their heads in open disdain. 

Regina couldn’t even hold onto the most valuable connection handed to her by fate. It was absurd. 

One by one, they turned and left. 

Regina wanted to stop them, but she couldn’t bring herself to say anything. Her eyes reddened. 

Nancy was the daughter she had carried for nine months. How could Nancy treat her so coldly? 

The thought made Regina’s heart ache.

Just then, her phone rang. 

It was Raine. 

“Mom, Grandma wants us at the hospital tomorrow,” Raine said. 

“All of us?” 

“Yeah. I think she’s finally ready to announce who the successor will be,” Raine said triumphantly. I told her the other day that if she doesn’t hand the company to me, I won’t let Dr. Gales perform the surgery on her. Looks like she’s thought it over. I’m certain she’s going to name me the heir.” 

Regina was thrilled. “I knew it! Your grandmother values her life too much to risk it. Raine, you’re finally going to take over the Lidell family business!” 

“Of course,” Raine said smugly. “No one wants to die. Mom, we have to be on time tomorrow.‘ 

“We will!” 

Seated at Nancy’s booth, Jordan had overheard parts of Regina’s conversation with Raine. He frowned. “That mother of yours is really something else. She’s biased and clueless. Why does she still expect you to be close to her after how she treats you?” 

“That’s just how she is,” Nancy said lightly, taking a sip of her tea. “But let’s not talk about her 

anymore.” 

Jordan looked at Nancy. “Nancy, I have a favor to ask.” 

“Go on.” 

“Our team is still short a racer. Would you consider joining us?” His voice carried a hint of 

nervousness. “I’ll make sure you get the best resources we have to offer.” 

Nancy blinked. She hadn’t thought about it before. 

Her gaze traveled to Gideon, who had also been silently watching her. 

He broke the silence first. “Do you want to?” 

“I…” Nancy hesitantly looked at Jordan. When the thought of what happened to the Murrays flashed in her mind, she made up her mind. 

“I’d like to join the team.” 

“Alright. Then, I’ll ensure that both of you are safe,” Gideon said. 

Jordan was moved. “Thank you, Nancy!” 

He stood to hug her, but Gideon stepped between them. “Words will do. There’s no need for hands- on gratitude.”
