“Hayley, this is far too expensive,” Regina said with fake modesty.Â
“Not at all!” Hayley Doyle replied. “This is nothing compared to what Ms. Hawthorne might give you.”Â
Hayley leaned in with a sugary smile on her face. “Regina, our family’s been hoping to collaborate with the Hawthornes for a while now. Do you think your daughter could make an introduction for us? I’d really love to meet her.”Â
Regina had expected Hayley to have ulterior motives. Still, she couldn’t deny the wave of satisfaction that came over her from seeing Hayley bow down to her. After all, Regina used to be the least noticed woman in the circle.Â
Regina lifted her chin and replied with superiority, “I can ask her for you. I can’t promise anything, though.”Â
“It’s alright. What if you introduced her to me? I’d love to speak with her directly,” Hayley said eagerly.Â
“I’ll ask her about it,” Regina said.Â
Hayley poured Regina another cup of coffee. “Wonderful. Here, have some more coffee.Â
The other women chimed in with admiration.Â
“Regina, where have you been getting your skincare done lately? Your complexion looks incredible!”Â
“Yes, truly. Your skin looks the best among all of us. I’d have guessed you were in your 20s at most!”Â
Regina chuckled. “Oh, you’re exaggerating.”Â
Although she was being modest, her smile stretched so wide that it almost reached her ears. Regina felt like she was glowing from their compliments.Â
Just then, a lady who had excused herself to use the restroom returned. Her face lit up with surprise. ” You won’t believe who I just saw!”Â
“Who?” the others asked in unison.Â
“Nancy!” she exclaimed. “She was just next to our booth. Isn’t that a coincidence?”Â
“Oh, what a stroke of fate! Regina, why don’t you invite her over to join us?” Hayley suggested.Â
Regina’s smile stiffened.Â
Nancy was here? Was it really just a coincidence?Â

She frowned slightly.Â
“Regina?” Hayley prompted, sensing her hesitation.Â
Regina gathered herself. “Alright, I’ll ask her.”Â
She got up from her seat and walked over to Nancy’s booth. Several curious ladies trailed behind her.Â
At her own table, Nancy looked at Regina with a calm expression. “Do you need something?”Â
Regina bristled at the lack of warmth in her address. “Nancy, I was having coffee with some friends over there. They’re all close to the Lidell family. Why don’t you come and sit with us for a bit?”Â
Nancy’s gaze swept over the women behind Regina.Â
Hayley stepped forward with a bright smile on her face. “Nancy, what a lovely coincidence. I’ve always wanted to meet you. You’re every bit as stunning as your mother. Beauty clearly runs in the family.”Â
“Sorry. I’m busy right now,” Nancy said, shifting her gaze back to Regina.Â
She was about to leave when Regina quickly stopped her. “Nancy, that’s not very polite. You could at least sit with us for a while before leaving.”Â
“Regina,” Nancy began in a low voice. “Since when have we had the kind of relationship where we can sit down and have coffee together?”Â
Her frosty words made Regina feel like she was talking to a stranger. Several of the women frowned slightly at the scene.Â
Regina felt her cheeks burn. Nancy’s words were like a phantom slap across her face. She leaned closer so that only Nancy could hear her and muttered, “Nancy, they just want to meet you. Could you do your mother a favor, just this once?”Â
Nancy’s lips curved into a faint smile.Â
Regina let out a deep breath. “Come on, Nancy.”Â
“Why would I do you any favors, Regina?” Nancy replied, tilting her head to the side. “Besides, isn’tÂ
your daughter? It certainly isn’t me.”Â
