Chapter 114 

It did not take long for Matthew to bring Amanda over to the private room where everyone was having dinner. 

The group quickly made space for her and asked the waiter to bring another menu. 

“Amanda, you’re back and did not even tell us. We all had time to pick you up, you know. Why would you go straight to Zachary’s place?” Mickey pulled her into the seat between himself and Matthew. 

Zachary glanced at her once before withdrawing his gaze, his tone cool. “There aren’t any spare rooms at my place. You’ll stay with Matthew or Mickey this year.” 

“Zach,” Amanda called softly. “I’ve always stayed at your place every year. I’m already used to 

1. it. Don’t trouble the others.” 

The look in her eyes was odd. It was to the point that every adult at the table could see it, though no one said anything aloud. 

Besides, now that Zachary was legally married, it was only proper for him to keep a distance. 

He did not respond to her. Instead, he quietly took a drink and sent Jessica a message. “Are you mad?” 

Jessica did not reply. 

Zachary stared blankly at his phone for a while. 

The men around the table, sensing the awkwardness, quickly tried to lighten the mood by chatting with Amanda and urging her to eat. 

Off to the side, Evelyn smirked to herself. Something about this year’s atmosphere felt different. 

“Mick, has Zach been keeping a mistress lately?” Amanda’s voice was not loud, but everyone in the room heard her clearly. 

Evelyn froze the moment she realized what she had just heard. 

Zachary’s eyes darkened dangerously. The hand holding his phone whitened at the knuckles. 

“Step outside with me.” His voice was ice–like. 

Even Evelyn shivered under his stare. She was still processing how true Amanda’s statement was when Zachary strode out.

Matthew glanced toward Amanda, who looked utterly startled. Her delicate face was as pale as 

paper. 

Mickey had not expected Zachary to lose his temper either. 

When Zachary was mad, none of them dared to say a word. 

Amanda took a trembling sip of warm water, then followed him outside. 

Zachary entered an adjacent empty private room. Amanda trailed behind him, and the moment she stepped in, he shut the door. 

“What did you say to her?” His gaze was full of accusation. 

“I didn’t say anything—” 

“Tell me!” 

Amanda clutched the hem of her shirt, trying to steady her breath. “Zach, you never used to be so fierce with me. You said you would take care of me forever. How could you bring another woman home? 

‘And a mistress, no less. If you’re looking for a woman, I can be that for you. I don’t need a title or anything else.” 

“Are you done?” Zachary stood there with his hands in his pockets, his gaze deep and unyielding. 

“Jessica isn’t a mistress. She’s my wife. By all rights, you should be respecting her. I’m not sure what led to the misunderstanding, but I don’t have feelings for you. 

“Back then, I only let you stay at my place because of your health. I wanted you to move on from the past. But now that your life’s back on track, you need to live it properly,” he said. 

“No, Zach! If you don’t like me, then why send me money every month? Why did you hire people to take care of me?” Amanda stepped closer, trying to grab his hand. 

He shifted aside before she could even touch him. 

“Because of your brother.” 

His bluntness stunned her. 

Back when they had been on the same mission, her brother had sacrificed his life to save the rest of the team. She had still been a student back then, not even graduated. 

Out of respect, the surviving comrades took it upon themselves to look after her. It could be

seen as fulfilling her brother’s dying wish. 

Since Zachary had been the only one injured and retired from service, the responsibility naturally fell to him. 

“My marriage isn’t public yet,” he said calmly. “I hope you won’t cause trouble for her. Otherwise, there’ll be no need for us to see each other again.” 

He looked at the tear–streaked girl in front of him, pulled out a tissue, and handed it over. 

“I understand, Zach.” Amanda took the tissue, crying silently. 

He did not stay a minute longer. He turned and left the room. 

Right then, Matthew happened to come out of the room next door. “How’d it go?”

“She likes me,” Zachary said simply, pulling the cigarette from Matthew’s fingers and placing it between his lips.
