Chapter 44 We Saw It With Our Own Eyes
The coldness in Gabriel’s eyes made Amelia shiver, but she still bit the bullet and finished her
act. “Don’t be mad at Dr. Sterling, Gabe. It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have come and interrupted you guys,” she said before leaving, even looking back every few steps she took
After she left, the silence in the office was deafening.
Gabriel looked at Emily and saw that she had no expression at all. At last, he tugged at his tie in annoyance and left without saying anything.
As soon as he left, the nurses‘ station at the department of cardiothoracic surgery went wild.
“Did you guys see it? Mr. Holdon trapped Dr. Sterling in her office. And that position…”
“Ms. Waverly was on the brink of crying. She just witnessed her boyfriend doing that with another woman. What a poor thing.”
“You’re right. Emily looked like a decent person. I didn’t think she was so promiscuous.”
An icy voice interrupted them, asking, “Who did you say was promiscuous?” Mallory was holding a medical record, standing behind them with a frosty expression.
The nurses were so frightened that their faces turned a little pale.
One of them had been with Amelia when Gabriel and Emily were “caught in the act,” so she was a little bolder. “It’s true, Dr. Prescott. We saw it with our own eyes.”
“That’s right. The office door was shut. If we hadn’t bust the door open, who would’ve known what could’ve happened inside?”
Mallory laughed out of anger. “You guys filled in the details yourself and made up a whole story. Even screenwriters have got nothing on you. Are you medical professionals or paparazzi?” she asked.
She was blunt, but the nurses refused to back down. Instead, they raised their voices and continued speaking
“You’re friends with Emily. Of course you’d take her side!”
“It’s true! So many people saw it!”
The commotion drew in more and more curious onlookers.
The nurses‘ confidence in their assumption frustrated Mallory so much that she was tempted to reveal Emily and Gabriel’s relationship.
Still, she held herself back. After all, Emily should be the one to reveal her relationship with

Gabriel.
In the end, Mallory simply glared at the nurses and left.
When she opened the door to Emily’s temporary office, nothing but silence filled the air. Meanwhile, Emily was flipping through the medical records, as if what was happening outside had nothing to do with her.
“Mills!” Mallory rushed toward her, feeling extremely sorry for her.
“Did you hear what I said? The things that those people say out there are so unpleasant to the ears! What are you still doing here? It’s obvious that Amelia set you up!” she added.
Emily slowly looked up at her and said, “I know.”
The way she was putting up with the situation infuriated Mallory. “You know? You know, yet you let them slander you? I can’t suffer in silence. I’m going to tell everybody now that you’re Gabriel’s wife! I’d like to see who would have the guts to criticize you then!” she said.
She was ready to leave when Emily got up and stopped her. “Don’t do it!”
Mallory looked back in confusion, furious that Emily wouldn’t stand up for herself. “Why? Are you going to let that homewrecker walk all over you?” she asked.
Emily shook her head, exhausted. “What’s the use of making it public now? All they’d say was that I was abusing my power as his wife to oppress my husband’s ‘true love.‘ They’ll say even harsher things about me then,” she explained.
She didn’t want to argue with those people about who was right and who was wrong anymore. It was too exhausting. This marriage was a mistake from the beginning, and she didn’t want to continue making mistakes anymore.
She just wanted to leave without any lingering trouble, cutting off from everything here on
out.
Emily looked at her best friend. Then, she slowly and clearly said, “Mal, I want to divorce him. I don’t want to have anything to do with him anymore. If we make our relationship public now, it’ll only complicate things.
“How could I break free then?”
In the corner of the hallway, Gabriel was frozen in place.
He had originally left, but unable to keep his pent up annoyance down, he was back at Emily’s office again without even realizing it.
He wanted to explain things to her, telling her that that was not his intention.

But as soon as he got to the door, he heard the conversation in the room.
