Emily woke up on time the following day. She had an important surgery that day and couldn’t
be late.
Once she got ready, she quickly headed for the door.
However, just as she was about to open it, she noticed that the doorknob wouldn’t budge, no
matter how hard she twisted it.
Was the door broken?
She couldn’t help but think about what had happened the night before. Did Gabriel ask her for her apartment number just to seek revenge on her?
How despicable!
She glanced at her watch. It was 8:10 am. The surgery was at 9:00 am, and she was almost running out of time.
She looked around before her gaze landed on the window.
She was on the second floor, and outside the window was the lawn.
Without hesitation, she moved a chair over, stepped on it, and opened the window with all her might. Then, she jumped off.
She felt a sharp pain in her calf as soon as she landed.
The sharp edges of the rose stand under the window had sliced through her pants, leaving a few deep cuts on her calf. Her blood quickly stained her pants red.
She didn’t even have time to glance at her wound. She just rushed out of the complex while limping and ran out to the street.

Meanwhile, Amelia was in another high–end complex. She was holding a cup of hot chocolate, watching the surveillance at Deerwood Apartments with a sneer.
“So what if you make it in time, Emily? I have more tricks waiting for you,” she thought.
Of course, Emily had no clue about that.
By the time she arrived at the department of cardiothoracic surgery, the surgery–in–progress light outside the operating room had gone off.

The patient’s family was surrounding a man in a white coat, expressing their gratitude toward him.
It was the deputy head of the department, Jonathan Lancaster. He was a snob who excelled at licking boots and stealing credit.
“The surgery was a success,” said Jonanthan, enjoying the flattery from the family with a glow on his face.
Emily’s assistant ran up to her, pulling her aside.
She was on the verge of crying as she said anxiously, “Dr. Sterling, Dr. Lancaster swooped in and performed the surgery that was supposed to be yours. He said you couldn’t make it because something had come up, so he stepped in instead.”
Emily looked at Jonathan with an icy gaze.
He had never gotten along with her, but he had never dared to be so reckless as he did today.
That meant that someone must have ordered him to do so.
It was either Gabriel or Amelia.
She thought of the door that had been broken for an unknown reason earlier, and her
narrowed.

“I know the patient’s situation. Even if the surgery was a success, we can’t let our guards down. He needs to be monitored for a period before we can make a conclusion. I suggest transferring him to the ICU for now and monitoring him for 24 hours,” said Emily.
The family that was reveling in joy was stunned upon hearing that.
Jonathan’s expression darkened in an instant as he asked, “Dr. Sterling, do you not trust my ability? I think the patient’s vitals are stable, so there’s no need to waste money on staying in the ICU.”
The family started hesitating as well.
“We… We don’t have much money, doctor…”
Emily felt her heart soften as she looked at them, so she said, “I’ll cover the cost for him to stay in the ICU today.”
Everybody fell silent.
Jonathan’s face went bright red as he shouted, “Emily! What are you trying to say? Do you mean that the surgery I performed would have issues? Are you questioning my competency?”

The patient’s family panicked, looking at both of them nervously.
Emily ignored his growls and comforted the family gently.
“It’s just a precaution. It’s always better to observe closely anyway,” she said.
She turned to the side and muttered in a voice that could only be heard by the two of them, ‘ Do you really think nobody would notice your sneaky switch? If I’m right, you didn’t update the surgeon’s name in the system, did you? You performed the surgery using my name. What exactly are you trying to pull?”
Colors drained from Johanthan’s face.
“I–I’ve no idea what you’re talking about, “he stuttered.
Feeling sheepish, he avoided Emily’s gaze and used the excuse to make rounds to flee the
scene.
At last, the patient was taken to the ICU.
As expected, a piercing alarm on the ICU monitor went off at 3:00 pm. The patient was suddenly experiencing an acute rejection reaction, and his heart rate began to plummet.
The patient’s wife was scared out of her wits, and she collapsed outside the emergency room.
The in–use light outside the room flickered on and off.
Two hours later, Emily walked out, feeling completely drained.
“It’s fine now. The patient is no longer in danger,” said Emily.
The patient’s wife was so happy that she broke into tears. She rushed over and held Emily’s hand, saying, “Thank you, Dr. Sterling. Thank you so much! But didn’t Dr. Lancaster say the surgery was a success? Why would there be complications? Is it because…he’s not competent enough?”
Emily looked into the woman’s eyes that were filled with trust, and she held her tongue. She couldn’t destroy her trust in the entire hospital.
She shook her head, saying gently but firmly, “No. Your husband’s physical condition is just rather unique. Any surgery would have its risks. Please don’t worry. The most dangerous stage is over. There won’t be any more complications after this.”
It was after she comforted the woman that she returned to her office, dragging her exhausted body behind her.
Emily thought it was over.
