Chapter 111

Valerie hadn’t returned home last night, and there was still no way to contact her even now. It left Lucius feeling increasingly irritable.

It was a state of mind that Lucius had never experienced before. He had been the one to propose that they live without interfering with each other’s lives, but the more he got to know her, the more he found himself being drawn to her.

When he woke up this morning, he was still in his own bed.

There were only two possibilities. The first was that the binding vow between Valerie and Lucius had lost its effect.

The second was that Valerie hadn’t slept the entire night.

Either way, Lucius wanted to know where she was and who she had been with the previous night.

As dusk began to fall again, Lucius started to feel uneasy. Was she not coming home tonight either?

Every time he called, her phone was either switched off or out of service.

He even went to her study, but strangely, he couldn’t open the door, no matter how hard he tried or what method he used.

Lucius had briefly considered ordering someone to break it open, but gave up on the idea, worried that she’d raise hell once she found out.

By the time it was 8:00 pm, Lucius could no longer sit still.

Silas ended a call and walked to Lucius.

He reported, “Your oldest brother called. He’s begging to see you, but politely I turned him down.”

Lucius nodded absentmindedly.

Ever since Caelus was arrested, Julius had been playing the family card, pleading for leniency so that his son wouldn’t be punished too severely.

But did he ever stop to think about how much evil Caelus had committed over the past decade?

Even if Lucius were merciful, the authorities would never let that scum walk free.

Suddenly, Silas pointed outside. “It’s Ms. Collins’ car.”

Lucius’ heart skipped a beat, and he immediately looked out the window.

Valerie’s beat-up car was slowly pulling into the courtyard.

Lucius forced himself to look calm as he sat back down.

So, she had finally decided to come home.

Silas was still standing by the window and looked out once more. “Mr. White, Ms. Collins just drove off again.”

Lucius frowned, leaning on his cane as he glanced out the window. Sure enough, just as Silas had said, Valerie’s car turned around and accelerated, disappearing into the night.

Valerie hadn’t expected something to happen barely half a day after parting with Lucinda.

She rushed to the hospital and immediately saw Lucinda running toward her. “Valerie, you’re finally here. Hurry, come with me.”

Valerie followed behind. “What’s going on?”

Lucinda said urgently, “It might be life-threatening. The doctors are resuscitating him right now.”

They rushed to the emergency room, where Valerie spotted a familiar face.

Owen was just as surprised as Valerie. “Valerie?”

He then looked at Lucinda. “You two know each other?”

“She’s a friend of mine,” Lucinda answered briefly.

Lucinda nodded at Owen in greeting.

Inside the room, several doctors were performing emergency procedures on the patient, who was surrounded by tubes and monitors.

The person being resuscitated was none other than Darrell.

Lucinda quickly explained, “He was rescued from the yacht and has been in treatment ever since. He was supposed to be discharged tomorrow, but his heart suddenly stopped half an hour ago. They managed to bring him back, but his condition is unstable.”

Owen’s eyes were bloodshot. “I checked the surveillance footage. Someone snuck into my brother’s ward while he was asleep. I suspect the White family is trying to finish him off.”

Laucinda instinctively glanced toward Valerie.

After all, she had just found out that Valerie was the wife of the White family’s head. Valerie raised an eyebrow. “And why exactly do you suspect the White family?”
