Chapter 156 I Will Not Let Anything Happen to You

Regina no longer bothered to hide her displeasure with Martha.

In the past, she would have held her tongue, but now that Raine was Martha’s supposed lifeline, she suddenly found her

courage.

Nancy cut in coldly, Grandma is fair to everyone. If someone thinks she isn’t, that’s just their ambition talking.”

You!Regina bristled, but Raine caught her arm and gave a small shake of her head. It’s alright, Mom. I think Nancy is right. Grandma treats us all the same.”

Seeing Raine so understanding made Regina even more moved.

Martha closed her eyes, clearly exhausted. Enough. All of you go home. I need to rest.”

One after another, the relatives left the hospital room.

Irene followed the crowd out, moving as quietly as a mouse did.

At the door, Irene returned to the bedside for a moment and pulled a small scented sachet from her pocket. Grandma, I heard you weren’t feeling well. So, I made this for you. I hope it helps you feel better soon.”

Martha accepted it, her gaze softening. Thank you, Irene.”

Come on, Irene! Let’s go!Emma snapped from the doorway.

Irene hurried after her.

The room quieted when only Nancy and Martha were left.

Nancy watched Irene’s figure fade from sight.

Martha murmured, Irene has had a hard life. It’s all Edward’s fault. When he was young, he had Irene with another woman. Ever since that woman left, Irene has struggled greatly.”

She really has,Nancy said softly.

But she’s kind,Martha said, turning the sachet between her fingers. Then, she added, Nancy, after I’m gone, take Irene with you when you leave the Lidell family.”

Nancy’s chest tightened with sorrow. Grandma, you’ll live a long, long life.”

I hope so,Martha said with a faint smile.

They were still talking when a tall, refined man stepped in against the light. Even Martha, who had seen so much in her life, felt a ripple of awe.

Mrs. Lidell Senior, it’s good to see you,Gideon said politely.

Nancy blinked, What are you doing here?”

Gideon looked at her and said gently, Your grandma is sick. How could I not be here?”

He set a gift box on the side table.

Martha opened the box and froze. Inside lay a vial of rare, preserved medicinal herbs, nearly impossible to find at any price. This is far too valuable, she said.

Not when it’s for you,Gideon said softly, his tone wrapped in warmth.

Grandma, this is my boyfriend, Gideon Fuller,Nancy introduced.

Martha asked in surprise, Gideon Fuller? From Boraska?”

It sounded impossible even to her, but Nancy nodded.

Martha was completely stunned. But then, she gathered herself. How did you two meet?”

Nancy hesitated for a moment, then decided to tell the truth. I was raised by the Moores.”

Martha drew in a long breath at the revelation.

Grandma, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner,Nancy said, watching Martha closely.

Martha let out a long sigh. I had guessed as much.”

Nancy’s grace was far beyond what an ordinary household could produce, and her talent spoke for itself.

If Andrew and Regina ever found out the truth, they’d be sick with regret.

Martha almost laughed. They had put Raine on a pedestal, but she couldn’t even come close to Nancy, let alone measure up to

her character.

Don’t tell the others,Martha said seriously.

I won’t,Nancy promised.

Martha cupped her cheek, her eyes soft with affection. Sweetheart, your parents were blind from the start.”

It’s okay since I have you,Nancy said with a faint smile.

I’m fine. Since Mr. Fuller is here, keep him company. Mr. Fuller, thank you for coming,Martha said.

I came to see you,Gideon said. I’m not in any rush.”

For all his commanding presence, he could still soften in front of Martha.

Martha gave an approving nod.

Grandma, don’t worry about your illness. I won’t let anything happen to you,Nancy said firmly.

Martha nodded. I believe you.”

After a while, Gideon had to leave, and Nancy walked him out.

I’ll reach out to Dr. Gales,he offered.

There’s no need. I can handle it,Nancy said.

Surprise flickered across his face, followed by quiet admiration. Nancy never failed to impress him.

Not far away, Howard Wagner, a department head at Fuller Group, left Northern Hospital after a meeting.

Jasper was waiting outside and stopped him as soon as he came out.

Jasper plastered on a smile. Mr. Wagner, have you had lunch yet? Allow me to treat you.”

Sorry. I’m in a hurry,Howard said coldly.

Jasper’s smile faltered. He quickly asked, Mr. Wagner, can I at least know why Fuller Group chose us at first but then switched to Northern Hospital?”
