Victoria studied Samantha’s expression and frowned. “Samantha, don’t tell me you still like Carter?” 

Back then, Carter had helped Victoria, and Samantha had been taken with him. 

But she was young then, and an arranged engagement had already been set for her since childhood. She couldn’t, in good conscience, pursue Carter while still betrothed to another. When she returned home, she asked to be released from the engagement-but her family refused. 

Her fiancé had grown up beside her and had always cared for her; he wouldn’t annul the betrothal. So Samantha spent years quietly fighting to free herself. When she finally succeeded, she went to Zachemaine to see Carter- only to learn he was already married. She didn’t want to be anyone’s mistress, so she buried her feelings and returned to the Malcolm family. 

Samantha didn’t deny it. “I did try dating a few times these years, but no one else has ever moved me. I know Carter was married and has a child. I thought long and hard-better to find someone I truly like than settle for a lifetime of compromise. 

“Victoria, you know how it is-children of the Malcolm family can’t avoid marriage forever. When the time comes, matches are arranged. The Biggs family is doing well now, and Carter is considered promising among the younger generation. If I give it a try, my family might agree. 

Victoria hesitated. “But Sharon is Carter’s ex-wife. Given Uriah’s relationship with her, I’m not sure your grandfather would allow it.” 

Samantha’s face showed a touch of disdain. “I’m Grandpa’s granddaughter. No matter how close his relationship with Sharon, he can’t love her more than he loves me. In the Malcolm family, Grandpa dotes on me the most. If I spend some time with him, he’ll stop thinking about Sharon. She’s just a temporary replacement, nothing more.” 

In the Malcolm household, where there were more boys than girls, Samantha had always been the most beautiful daughter and had been indulged from childhood. 1 

But Victoria didn’t see it that way. Judging from Uriah’s attitude toward Sharon, it wasn’t that simple; Sharon seemed to mean more than just a passing substitute. 

Before Victoria could say more, someone shouted, “Lex is awake!” 

They hurried into the ward. Lex had indeed regained consciousness, but his body was ravaged-every inch marred, thin as bone; not a trace remained of the handsome man he once was. 

At the sight of Victoria, he reflexively barked, “Out! All of you-get out!” 

His voice was a broken rasp. The others hurried to soothe him, while Victoria, calm and steady, spoke and gradually brought him back from the edge. 

“Lex,” she said gently, “these wounds are temporary. If you cooperate with the treatment, you’ll recover.” 

Once he’d calmed, Victoria asked the question everyone feared most. “Lex, what happened? Where were you? Who took you?”

Recalling that month of horror, Lex seethed with a hatred he could barely restrain-he wanted nothing more than to tear Julliard limb from limb. 

He knew, though, people like Julliard didn’t stop at kidnapping; they planned for the worst and seemed to welcome danger. Finding a way to make Julliard suffer would be the only retribution. 

A strange, fierce light flickered in Lex’s eyes. He spoke slowly, each syllable a blade: “It-was-Sharon!” 1
