“You’re naïvely innocent,” Jamie sneered. “Do you know how much the Kalen family would owe in breach penalties if a contract is terminated before completion? Even if I’d crippled your hand-or killed you- this partnership would still have to continue. With your low intellect, you think you’ll survive working at the Kalen Group?” 

He set down his teacup and smiled with casual contempt. “Better go study a few more years.’ 

Sharon didn’t flare with anger. Her voice remained level. 

“So this agreement was a joke to you, Jamie?”

“Exactly.” Jamie tore off his last fig leaf of pretense and admitted it outright. “I was toying with you. I didn’t expect you’d actually take it seriously.” 

He laughed lightly. “If you’re upset, sue me. I’d like to see which court would entertain such a childish wager.” 

He wore the insolent look of a man who believed himself untouchable. 

Sharon didn’t rise to the bait. She turned and looked calmly at Richard and Rick. “Do you agree with him?” 

Richard answered immediately, “Sharon, I will handle this. No matter the cost, billions, even trillions, we won’t let the man who harmed you go unpunished.” 

Thomas interjected, blunt and practical. “Talking isn’t enough. If Jamie wreaks havoc on your turf, shouldn’t you teach him a lesson? Since he ruined Sharon’s hand, fairness demands he lose his as well. That would at least restore some of Sharon’s dignity.” 

Jamie snorted derisively, lounging as if he were in his own home. He showed no fear. 

Richard’s expression hardened. “Thomas is right. Someone who acts so brazenly on our grounds must not be let 

off.” 

“Seize him!” Richard barked. 

“Dad-” voices rose in alarm from Victoria and the three brothers. 

Rick’s tone was cooler. “Dad, don’t act rashly. If Jamie committed a crime, let the law punish him. We can’t abuse private justice.” 

Silas agreed. “Yes. We should turn this over to the police. We have no right to take the law into our own hands.” 

Victoria frowned and addressed Jamie, “Jamie, what you did was wrong. Apologize to Sharon.” 

Johanna sat silently beside Jamie-unusually mute-thinking that Thomas had cleverness to spare, pitting Sharon and the Kalen family against each other until both bled. 1 

Jamie, who normally deferred to Victoria, waved her off now. “Victoria, this doesn’t concern you. Step out of it.” 

He wanted her out of it-anyone who joined would only get tainted. 

Thomas had no such sentimentality. He dragged Victoria back into the fray.

“Nonsense. Didn’t Victoria herself say that if Sharon produced proof, then whatever she demanded would stand? Do you want me to play the recording?” 

Without waiting for consent, he cast the audio recording to the room’s speakers and played it.
