Chapter 239
The cardiothoracic inpatient department was two floors down.
Ruby froze momentarily and was about to re-enter the elevator when Joseph stopped her.
Frowning, she watched as the elevator closed and grumbled, “Dad, why did you stop me? I already heard that a woman had seduced Sebastian, and you’re even doing surgery for that woman’s grandma. Dad, what on earth are you thinking?”
“No, what on earth are you thinking?” Joseph’s expression darkened considerably, shocking
Ruby.
Then, Joseph roared, “Ruby, you’re a doctor, yet all you think about is love and romance! Do you think I’m unaware of what you’ve been doing in the hospital?
“A nurse once brought dinner for Sebastian one day, and the very next day, you tried to use my name to have her transferred to another department. Now, you’re even saying things that go right against the medical code of professional conduct!
“That woman’s grandmother is my patient. Do I need to take you into consideration before carrying out a surgery for my patient? Are you even my daughter?”
Joseph’s assistant quickly stepped in. “Dr. Gardner, please calm down.”
“Ruby, if you’re not interested in working in this field and plan on using your job to find yourself a boyfriend, you can leave right now.” Joseph was extremely disappointed in her.
His son, Lucas, had never liked studying and was spoiled rotten by the family. Even after being sent overseas to study abroad after graduating high school, Lucas remained unmotivated and
unskilled.
Meanwhile, he had carefully nurtured Ruby since she was young, yet her mind was filled with nothing but romance. She had even said such absurd words.
Joseph added, “Ruby, Sebastian has a girlfriend. Don’t you think you’re just embarrassing yourself by chasing after him?
“He had only agreed to be one of the hospital’s ambassadors and work with you because of me. It’s time for you to come to your senses.”
After reprimanding Ruby, Joseph felt a headache coming on and instructed his assistant to gather his team to make the necessary arrangements.
Ruby paled, and she stood frozen in place for some time before she stomped her foot in

During Margaret’s surgery, Thomas had rushed over and was currently sitting on a bench, while Valeria was leaning against the wall.
Sebastian was also standing nearby, about 30 feet away from Valeria. He leaned against the wall with a cigarette in his mouth. There was a trash can on his left, and he’d tap it occasionally.
When a nurse passed by them, she was shocked to see Sebastian there. “Dr. Grant, what are you doing here?”
Sebastian nodded but remained silent. Suddenly, his phone rang.
After answering the call, he asked, “Is there a problem at the wards?”
His voice was slightly hoarse from all the smoke.
Jamie said, “No, I’m here. It’s just that I applied for leave for the next two days. Why don’t I swap my shifts with you so you can have the time off?”
Sebastian fell silent for a few seconds before he put out his cigarette and rubbed his temples.”
Thank you.”
“No problem. I can’t believe you’re thanking me…” Jamie exclaimed.
The surgery lasted for three hours. Once Margaret had been wheeled into the recovery ward, Joseph informed Valeria that the surgery had been extremely successful.
Valeria’s tense heart immediately relaxed. When she turned around, she spotted Sebastian slowly walking away.
A faint ripple stirred in her eyes as she watched him disappear into the distance. In truth, she knew he had been standing nearby throughout the surgery.
That night, Margaret’s condition remained stable, and Thomas said he would stay the night to watch over her.
Valeria also needed to return home to check on Selena.
As soon as she walked out of the hospital, a car stopped beside her. The car had been lurking in the shadows, and it seemed like it had been waiting for her.
Sebastian rolled down the window. “Have you calmed down? If you have, we should talk.”

Valeria opened the car door and got in.
He drove for a while before pulling over at a deserted and quiet road. His jaw was clenched, and he was gripping his steering wheel so tightly that the veins on his arms had popped out.
“Eight years ago, you were pregnant. At Verdanci District Hospital, Scarlett Walker from the obstetrics and gynecology department performed a c-section for you on November 19th, 6:30 pm…”
Sebastian choked on his sobs several times.
As Valeria slowly turned her head, the car light shone on her deathly pale face. Her voice was tight as she said, “It was a boy, but he died. That little boy was ours. I did call you that day…”
