Chapter 232Â
The elevator doors opened onto the thoracic surgery inpatient department, and a middle-aged couple walked out.Â
Jennifer craned her neck forward and muttered, “She’s forever getting sick and hospitalized. Now, she needs surgery. And just like that, we’re the ones stuck taking care of her.”Â
Thomas frowned. “Enough. I told you not to come. You insisted on following me.”Â
Jennifer grew even angrier. “At her age, how much is this surgery going to cost? And who’s going to take care of her? You don’t really think Jane, that useless woman, has that kind of money, do you?”Â
“Mom told us not to worry about the money for the surgery. I’m her son, after all. I can’t just leave everything to Jane. But I think we should at least contribute something… maybe a few thousand dollars…”Â
“Are you crazy?” Jennifer’s voice sharpened. “Your mom’s bank cards are all with her. Those two apartments from the demolition haven’t even been sorted yet. They’re still in her hands. The relocation payout’s with her too. And you? What do you have, being an uncle?”Â
“I asked the neighbors. They haven’t received notices either. Sunnycrest Residence Phase 3, the community they’re relocating us to, isn’t even finished yet.”Â
When Thomas entered the ward, Valeria happened to be walking out with a kettle to fetchÂ
water.Â
Margaret was propped up in bed, crocheting a blanket. She had nimble hands and could do any pattern. She wanted to make one for Selena to use during her noon naps.Â
She used expensive cashmere yarn, soft and smooth to the touch.Â
She had even been learning different stitches and cartoon designs from short video tutorials.Â
Thomas came in. “Mom, why aren’t you resting?”Â
“Jennifer didn’t come with you?” Margaret glanced toward the door.Â
“She’s here. She’s waiting outside,” he replied. “Mom, you should rest. After the surgery, Jane and I will take turns taking care of you.”Â
Margaret nodded. She only had this one son. She had called him this time because she didn’t want Valeria to bear everything alone. It was too much for her.Â

Suddenly, the door was pushed open from the outside.Â
“Thomas, we’ve all been fooled by Jane, that wretched young woman. I just asked the nurses’ station.” Jennifer came in, glanced at Margaret lying in bed.Â
“Mom, you have lung cancer. How can surgery fix it? Do you know how much this will cost? That little bit of savings of yours won’t be enough. Thomas and I don’t have money for this.”Â
Margaret froze.Â
The ball of yarn rolled to the floor and disappeared under the bed.Â
Her hands shook. After a few seconds, she clutched her chest, her breathing uneven.Â
Thomas hurried to hold her up. He shot a glare at Jennifer, trying to get her to stop, though he was stunned himself.Â
“Mom, don’t you still have 100 thousand dollars in your account? Honestly, the treatment’s not worth it. The more you treat it, the worse it’ll get. You’ll just suffer more. Why not give the money to me? Thomas and I will take care of you until it’s your time.”Â
Margaret trembled all over, her lips quivering, unable to speak.Â
“Jennifer, stop talking,” Thomas ground out.Â
“Fine. I won’t stand in the way of you and your mom. But don’t expect a penny from me. We’re not footing the bill for her treatment.” With that, Jennifer turned and walked out of the ward.Â
Carrying the kettle, Valeria was about 30 feet from the ward when she heard that sharp, grating voice cutting through the air, stabbing at her eardrums.Â
It was Jennifer’s voice-shrill, cutting, and full of spite. Even from a distance, her voice was so sharp it made her sick.Â
Valeria’s hand clenched tighter around the kettle as she strode forward. After a few steps, her pace halted abruptly.Â
Jennifer happened to walk out of the ward, coming face to face with Valeria.Â
She froze, staring at Valeria’s face. It was as if she were looking at a stranger, yet oddly, she looked eerily familiar.Â
Jennifer couldn’t place it. She had never seen this woman. She instinctively asked, “Who are you, staring at me like that?”Â
“What are you doing here?” Valeria’s voice was icy.Â

Jennifer stared at her, dazed for a few seconds. Then, remembering how Thomas had said Jane had slimmed down, and hearing the cold tone, her eyes suddenly widened.Â
She pointed at Valeria, shocked, unable to speak. “You… you…”Â
Valeria pressed her lips together. “You’re not welcome here. Grandma doesn’t want to see you either.”Â
She walked to the ward door, hand on the knob.Â
Jennifer suddenly grabbed Valeria’s wrist. “Is that old woman’s bank book with you? I’ve seen it before. There’s still 100 thousand dollars in it.”Â
Jennifer looked Valeria up and down. She was dressed in plain clothes, nothing compared to her own daughter, Ivy.Â
So what if Valeria had gotten into the best university in Slate City back then? So what if she had lost weight? Her quality of life still couldn’t compare to Ivy’s.Â
“This illness can’t be cured anyway. Why not take that 100 thousand dollars out, and we can split it?”Â
“What did you say to my grandmother?” Valeria’s fingers curled tightly, and the kettle in her hand suddenly felt unbearably heavy.Â
“What else could I say? It’s cancer. Treatment’s just a waste of money. If I were her, I’d just take poison and-”Â
Before Jennifer could finish, a hard slap landed across her cheek.Â
She froze for a short moment.Â
