Chapter 222

Valeria didn’t respond to Sebastian. She closed her eyes, her cheek resting against the man’s

chest.

After a moment of silence, she said, “Sebastian, whether I’m married to Shane or not, we won’t be together.

“About Grandma, I’m very grateful to you. Just give me a number, and I’ll give you what you

want.’

With that, she pushed him away. She left the man’s embrace, picked up her clothes, and put them back on before getting out of the car.

Sebastian didn’t stop her.

His eyes dimmed.

Standing outside the car, Valeria didn’t meet his gaze. They both avoided looking directly at

each other.

She lingered for a moment outside, then turned and walked toward the inpatient building.

Sebastian took the last two cigarettes from the pack and drove away.

The next morning, Margaret woke up and asked where Shane was.

Valeria poured her a glass of water. “He went back.”

“It’s work season now. He should work hard. It’s my legs that failed me, suddenly giving up on me while I was walking.

“Riri, I called your uncle. He’ll be here later. You should go back too. The doctor already said I can be discharged the day after tomorrow to rest at home. I just need to go to the clinic every day for some anti-inflammatory medicine.”

“I’m not leaving. I’m staying to take care of you,” Valeria said, picking up Margaret’s down jacket and folding it.

Suddenly, a card fell out of the pocket.

Valeria bent down to pick it up. “Grandma, what’s this?”

Margaret glanced at it and, without hiding anything, pressed the card into Valeria’s palm. The

“Riri, there’s a million dollars in here. Keep it well and don’t let your uncle know. This money is for you.”

“Grandma, how do you have so much money? Is this the relocation payout? How did you break our leg? Grandma, tell me.”

Margaret was silent for a few seconds. It was as if she didn’t know how to explain or was deciding whether to tell Valeria.

Valeria crouched down. “Grandma, who gave you this money?”

She also wanted to question how Margaret suddenly broke her leg.

This bank card was from Pinnacle Private Bank, the largest bank in Slate City, a VIP private banking card that required proof of assets in the nine-figure range to open an account in their VIP department.

In all of Slate City, Valeria certainly wasn’t qualified to hold one, but that didn’t mean she didn’t recognize it.

The card had a faint black-and-gold finish, with a distinctive design.

“Riri… your mother… she’s back…” Margaret couldn’t help letting out a soft sigh.

The daughter she remembered was nothing like the imposing, designer-clad society lady she had seen that day. Her daughter looked so different that she almost didn’t recognize her.

Valeria froze. She was utterly unfamiliar with the role of a mother. Yet, her heart still gave a

small, involuntary pull.

Her mother…

For as long as Valeria could remember, that role had been missing from her life. She was about to ask more when the ward door opened from outside.

“Mom, I really thought it was a scam call. I didn’t expect that you actually broke your leg.” Thomas walked in.

“I called Jennifer. She’ll be here soon, too. When she heard you broke your leg, she got worried and closed the shop. She’s coming right away.”

Suddenly, Thomas looked at Valeria, who was leaning over the bed. “And you are…

Without a word, Margaret slipped the card into Valeria’s palm, urging her to keep it safe. “Riri, you should head back to the city. You still have work, don’t you? Your uncle’s here now…”

‘Thomas’ eyes widened in disbelief. “You? You’re Jane?”

He had thought she was some beautiful celebrity. She was nothing like the Jane he remembered.

For a moment, he was stunned.

“Jane, thanks for helping these past couple of days. I didn’t think that call from the hospital was real. Once I knew, I came right away. Your aunt’s on her way too. I asked her to make chicken soup.”

In the ward, he spoke to Margaret with exaggerated concern.

Valeria knew it was nothing more than for the two demolished apartments Margaret owned.

She didn’t bother to badmouth Thomas or Jennifer. Margaret saw Thomas as her only son. Valeria simply told Margaret to rest well, then left the ward.

She made a trip back to Cranary.

At Margaret’s home, she searched all the cupboards but couldn’t find that photo again. She wanted to know what kind of person her mother was.
