Nancy finally replied to Regina, “Why is the address a cafe?”

Regina answered almost at once. “The doctor in charge of your grandma had something to handle at that cafe. Hurry over and confirm her condition with him!”

It sounded fishy, but anything involving Martha came first.

Nancy drove straight to the cafe, and sure enough, spotted a young man in a white coat by the

window.

“Hello,” Nancy said as she took the seat across from him. “Are you my grandma’s doctor?”

“Yes. Nice to meet you, Ms. Moore. I’m Jasper Lewis.” His gaze swept over her, obviously pleased with what he saw. “I didn’t expect you to be this young and pretty.”

“How is my grandma?” Nancy asked, cutting to the chase.

“Her condition is relatively stable,” Jasper said, then he waved it off.

“But let us not get into that today. I heard you’re talented at both piano and design, but my salary is more than enough to support you. You wouldn’t have to work so hard once you’re

with me.”

Nancy frowned. “What are you talking about?”

“Aren’t we on a blind date?” Jasper lifted a brow. “You look surprised. You didn’t expect to be matched with someone as exceptional as me?”

A blind date? So, Regina had set her up?

“You have the wrong idea,” Nancy said evenly. “I’m not here to date you. Where is my grandma right now?”

“Isn’t she getting a checkup?” Jasper said with a frown. “What are you even talking about? Mrs. Lidell told me you wanted to meet me!”

He let out a derisive laugh and looked her over with open contempt. “Oh, I get it. You think a doctor is not good enough for you. Hate to break it to you, but my family owns that hospital!”

He waited for awe and regret that never came.

“I’m not looking to date anyone,” Nancy said calmly. “If you were misled, take it up with Regina!”

Nancy rose to leave, but Jasper grabbed her wrist. “Fine, maybe you didn’t intend to before. But after seeing me, haven’t you changed your mind? My family’s been in medicine for generations.”

Women had always flocked to him, and he had turned his nose up at every one of them. Now, he’d finally found someone he liked, but she wasn’t interested in him. That bruised his ego.

“You’re outstanding, and you’ll meet someone even better,” Nancy said indifferently as she slipped her hand free.

Jasper watched her elegant silhouette glide toward the door, resentment pooling in his eyes.

At the entrance, a black Rolls-Royce sped past.

Nancy narrowed her eyes. The car looked familiar, although she couldn’t place it.

She let the thought go and crossed the street to the hospital. In the examination area, she

found Martha.

“Grandma, how are you?”

Martha tucked a test sheet into her pocket and offered a light smile. “I’m fine. Just routine labs. What brings you here?”

“I called you, but you didn’t pick up. So, I got worried. Someone said you were here for a checkup, so I came.”

“Oh? Who told you that?” Martha asked.

“Jasper Lewis.”

“I see.” Martha’s expression stayed mild, and her gaze softened on Nancy. “Don’t worry. I’m fine. You must be swamped, managing both the design department and Duran Corporation at

the same time.”

“It is busy, but manageable.”

Martha studied her for a moment. “You’re working so hard. If only you had someone you could really lean on.”

“It’s alright, Grandma. These are minor things. I can handle them,” Nancy said.

“I know you can.” Martha’s smile warmed. “What are you in the mood for tonight?”

They then grabbed dinner at a nearby spot. Afterward, Martha headed home, and Nancy returned to her place.

Fresh from a shower, she unlocked her phone and finally saw Gideon’s messages.

“Babe, what are you doing?”

“Honey, are you busy?”

“Darling, dinner tonight?”

Her thumbs flew over the keyboard. But just before she hit send, the voices she had overheard

outside Gideon’s office drifted back.

His doctor had warned him not to eat spicy food, and she still had no idea why Gideon had pushed himself through that spicy barbecue.

The uncertainty made her erase everything.

Annoyed at her own mood, she flipped her laptop open. There was no time to brood. The hours had to be spent where they mattered.

Right then, Hannah forwarded her a file, and Nancy’s focus snapped to work.

Night settled over the city like a veil of satin. At last, Nancy closed her laptop and went to bed.

By morning, light spilled across the floorboards. Nancy got ready to head to the office, but the moment she opened her door, she froze.

“You… How long have you been standing here?”

Gideon leaned against the frame in a bespoke suit that looked a little worse for wear, his sharp features shadowed by faint weariness.

Those dark, narrow eyes rested on her with something she couldn’t immediately read.

“I just got here,” he said in a low, hoarse voice. “I brought you breakfast.”

She heard the strain beneath the calm. “What’s wrong?”

There was a beat of silence. “Did you go on a blind date yesterday?” he asked.
