When no one on Hillary’s side answered, a few people clustered behind Natalie piped up, “This is lunch from The Silver Garden! What? Too good for it?” 

Faces around Nancy darkened. This was just too much! 

“Who wants your leftovers?” Hillary snapped. “Take them and get lost!” 

Wendy snorted. “Come on! The Silver Garden’s leftovers could sell out if we put them up for grabs. We were generous enough to bring it over since your food didn’t come. And this is the thanks we get?” 

They had come to gloat and were still trying to act noble. Hillary looked ready to blow a gasket. 

Nancy’s expression didn’t flicker. She stepped up to the foil trays, lifted a lid, and glanced 

inside. 

Across from her, Natalie smiled like a cat that got the cream. “Knew you’d come around.” 

“I don’t look down on leftovers,” Nancy said, meeting Natalie’s eyes, her voice calm as glass. 

“Sometimes, when I see someone hungry, I leave certain dishes untouched so they can eat.” 

Natalie’s smile faded. Old memories clawed their way up. 

Back in high school, Natalie was broke, while Nancy’s lunches looked straight out of a 

cookbook. 

One day, starving and desperate, Natalie had sneaked a bite from Nancy’s leftovers. After that, Nancy always “happened” to leave food—often whole portions, barely touched. 

Nancy held her gaze. “So, are you humiliating who you used to be?” 

Color drained from Natalie’s face, and the midday sun suddenly felt like ice on her skin. 

Oblivious, Wendy bristled. “What are you even talking about? Natalie would never eat leftovers!” 

“Right! We were being kind so you wouldn’t go hungry,” another chimed in. “If you don’t want it, then don’t eat at all!” 

“The Silver Garden’s food is great. Those greasy boxes you ordered will taste like motor oil!” 

They burst out laughing.

Hillary drew a breath to fire back, but a dozen people in aprons and white toques strode in, carrying fresh ingredients, folding tables, and chairs. 

The lead chef lifted his chin and asked, “Is this the ‘For You, All My Life’ crew?” 

“Yes,” Nancy said. “And you are?”

They presented their chef credentials. “Chefs from The Grand Regent. We apologize for being late. We’ll begin your lunch service now.” 

For a beat, everyone just stared. 

The Grand Regent never did mass catering, yet here were their chefs, ready to cook on-site. 

Someone pinched his own forearm and yelped. “Ow! This is real life!” 

Natalie and her group gaped as the team of chefs laid out tables, set the burners, and got to work. 

Within minutes, an aroma rolled across the set. Natalie felt her senses reel before she caught herself. 

She quickly masked her shock with a sneer. “Really, Nancy? Just because we’re eating The Silver Garden, you bring in impostors pretending to be The Grand Regent’s chefs? The Grand Regent doesn’t do group services, and they certainly don’t send out their chefs!” 

“Exactly.” Wendy jumped in. “It’s impossible that The Grand Regent’s chefs would cook for you. Who do you think you are? Unbelievable! You really will do anything to make yourself look good!” 

Nearby crew members drifted over, drawn by the commotion. 

“The Grand Regent chefs?” 

“How could that even be possible? Didn’t you hear? They’re just jealous that Natalie ordered from The Silver Garden, so they brought in fakes!” 

“Fakes? Come on! That lie doesn’t even pass a sniff test!” 

Disdainful looks flicked toward Hillary’s set. 

“They’re the real deal,” Hillary shot back. “Saying ‘fake’ doesn’t make it so!” 

She didn’t know how Nancy had pulled it off, but the aroma alone made it clear that these were true masters. The Silver Garden couldn’t even compare.

Natalie laughed outright. “You can’t even fake it convincingly!” 

Snickers rippled through her group. They didn’t believe for a second that the chefs were real. 

Hillary was ready to argue, but when she saw Nancy ignore them completely, she dropped it. 

Meanwhile, the chefs kept their heads down and cooked. 

The smell of food filled the air, and throats across the lot worked as people instinctively swallowed. 

In no time, the first platters hit the tables. 

Nancy waved everyone in, even the site staff. Each person only got a small bite to share, but even that was enough to make eyes widen in surprise. 

“Oh my God! This is the best thing I’ve ever eaten!” 

“How did they do this?” 

“It looks simple, but it tastes amazing!” 

Spectators watched them eat and practically drooled. 

Natalie’s crew had been happily enjoying their meal, but when the fragrance reached them, their own dishes no longer seemed appetizing. 

“They’ve got skills, but they’re still fakes,” someone muttered, stubborn to the end. 

“It’s impossible! The Grand Regent’s chefs never cook on-site,” another firmly said. 

Right then, a chef gave his pan a sharp flick, sliding a dish onto a platter and setting it on the table with effortless flair. 

Someone blurted, “That’s The Grand Regent’s signature dish! I’ve seen it served there myself!
