Eleanor rubbed her nose. “I don’t know.”

Catherine’s eyes widened in shock, and her voice rose sharply. “You don’t know who the child’s father is?”

Eleanor’s voice softened a little. “I got drunk back then and accidentally slept with someone.”

Catherine was at a loss for words. “This isn’t a surprise-it’s a huge shock to me.

Eleanor guided Catherine onto the couch. “That’s not the point. The point is, don’t you think

this child is adorable?”

Catherine lowered her head to look at the child and mumbled to herself. “Indeed.”

Eleanor buried her face in her hands with a sigh. “I thought so too. When I first found out I was pregnant, I was terrified.

“I had no intention of keeping the baby, but then the doctor said my health wouldn’t allow me to terminate the pregnancy. I had no choice but to give birth.”

At that moment, Catherine truly couldn’t find words to describe her feelings. She could only say her emotions were extremely complicated.

Eleanor changed the subject, resting her shoulder against Catherine’s as she tried to set Catherine up with her brother. “Cathy, now that you’re divorced, have you ever thought about marrying another man?”

Catherine’s attention was entirely on the child, so she didn’t respond to Eleanor right away.

Eleanor kept talking anyway. “I think my brother’s wonderful. He’s gentle, incredibly attentive, and in no way worse than Harry. Why don’t you consider him?”

Jeremy had secretly loved Catherine for years, but they had never been together. As his sister, Eleanor felt that she had to help him out.

Catherine coughed, startled. “That doesn’t seem right,” she said.

“What’s so wrong with that? I think you two would be a great match. After all, you’re single now. Why not give it some thought?”

Eleanor winked. “Unlike Harry, Jeremy doesn’t have all those messy relationships. He’s never messed around with anyone.”

Catherine shook her head. “I’d rather not. I think things are fine as they are. Besides, I’m

pregnant.”

Upon hearing that, Eleanor said, “That’s nothing. If Jeremy marries you, he could even get a child for free. He’s the lucky one.”

Catherine was stunned. “How could you put it that way?”

Eleanor wrapped an arm around Catherine’s shoulder, thrilled at the thought of Catherine ending up with Jeremy. “As long as you two are together, that’s all that matters.”

Catherine thought to herself that those two things are completely different. She firmly rejected the idea, yet she still kept Eleanor with her all afternoon.

When Catherine mentioned that Harry was trying to take her child, Eleanor exclaimed in indignation, “That’s outrageous!

“You’re the one going through all the pain of pregnancy, and he just gets to be a dad without lifting a finger. No way! We absolutely can’t let him get what he wants.

Catherine sighed. “Let’s not think that far ahead. The Zimmerman family probably won’t let him act recklessly.”

Eleanor felt a pang of sympathy for Catherine. “You’ve been through so much in two years of marriage and never said a word. You really shouldn’t have married him in the first place.”

Catherine thought back to her younger self, who believed that love could overcome anything. But in reality, her loveless marriage had worn her down.

Eleanor draped an arm around Catherine’s shoulders and said, “Let’s not dwell on these sad things. How about we go out and have some fun?”

Catherine glanced at the child in her arms. “What about the baby?” she asked.

“Leave it to Jeremy,” Eleanor replied.

She carried the child upstairs, then pulled Catherine by the hand and led her out the door.

Seeing Eleanor by her side, a sense of contentment spread through Catherine, and a faint smile tugged at her lips. It felt as if she had returned to the carefree days of the past.

Eleanor brought Catherine into a luxury boutique.

Catherine immediately spotted a camel-colored crocodile leather bag. She was about to speak when a mocking voice came from behind them.

“Catherine, you can’t afford that bag.”
