Chapter 20 Into the Back Alley Alone
Emily shook her head. From the other pocket of her coat, she pulled out a phone that had been on silent mode the whole time.
The screen lit up with an ongoing call of 32 minutes to the emergency communication center.
She wasn’t stupid. Before meeting Bradley and Viola in the back alley of the hospital, she’d called the police. Using a second phone, she kept the line connected throughout and the phone
hidden in her pocket.
She knew all too well that a video could be easily deleted or dismissed as falsely fabricated. It
wouldn’t be enough to nail Amelia, Bradley, and Viola for good.
What she needed was their confession, which could serve as undeniable, irrefutable evidence of their wrongdoings.
Now, as Bradley and Viola lay pinned to the ground and screaming under the weight of the officers, Emily stepped out from behind them. Her face was pale, but there was no sign of relief in her expression.
A black Bentley charged forward at a speed that nearly lost control. It screeched and braked to
a halt by the side of the curb.
The door slammed open before Gabriel rushed out. The moment he saw Emily, he strode over
and grabbed her arm.
His voice was hoarse, and his chest heaved violently. “Are you out of your mind, Emily? How could you have gone into that back alley alone? Do you have any idea what these people are capable of?”
To Emily’s ears,
his concern sounded only like irony. It seemed he could feel afraid, after all. Was he terrified that if things got too out of control, his beloved Amelia would be dragged down with it?
When she calmly looked up at him, her gaze was so unfamiliar that Gabriel felt his heart
clench.
Gently pulling her arm free, she said, “So you knew from the very beginning that I was framed.
It was more of a statement rather than a question.
Gabriel’s breath caught, and a flicker of panic crossed his eyes.

“And when exactly did you get involved, Mr. Holton? Was it when Amelia told them to drug that elderly man to set me up? Or was it when you realized the truth was coming out, and to protect Amelia, you had me kidnapped to get rid of me for good?”
Her words were clear and icy, each driven into Gabriel’s heart like a blade. His expression
darkened.
“Are you suggesting that I had them kidnap you?”
Her lips curled into a mocking smile. “Stop pretending to be the good guy, Mr. Holton. It’s disgusting.”
“Mills! Are you okay? Are you hurt?”
Mallory rushed over from another car and pulled Emily protectively behind her, warily glaring
at Gabriel.
Emily shook her head. For the first time tonight, warmth returned to her frosty gaze. “I’m fine.”
She didn’t spare Gabriel another glance and turned to follow the officers toward the police car. “Let’s go.”
The police station was brightly lit. Emily and Mallory had just given their statements when another group
arrived.
Amelia was among them, there to cooperate with the investigation. Dressed in a pure white dress with her hair perfectly smooth over her shoulders, she looked vulnerable and pitiful.
When she noticed Emily standing there unharmed, a flicker of emotion flashed in her eyes.
As they passed, a whisper only audible to Emily’s ears slipped into the air. “Why aren’t you dead yet, Emily?”
Moments later, Amelia sat before the officers, weeping.
“I don’t know how any of this happened, officers. I gave them money just because the elderly man was sick, and they’re a pitiful, struggling family. I just wanted to help.
“I never told them to do anything.”
She lifted her tear–filled eyes and innocently looked at Gabriel before giving Emily a timid glance.

“Maybe… they got the wrong person, or maybe Dr. Sterling offended someone during her medical missions, and now they’re targeting both of us.”
She had no idea that the officers had seen the video and listened to the full recording. Everything was preserved as solid evidence.
Lost in thought, Gabriel suddenly turned to the officers and demanded. “We’d like to settle this privately.”
“I refuse,” Emily responded with a low, sharp laugh.
