Victoria and Jamie had already analyzed the situation. The likelihood that Johanna had successfully passed herself off as Thomas’s long–lost love was slim. Otherwise, why would Thomas show Jamie no mercy at all?
Victoria had never doubted the truth in Jamie’s claim that Thomas had tried to assassinate him. With Jamie’s temperament, he would never make such an accusation without certainty.
Johanna countered, “Thomas is helping Sharon only to gain her trust. For all we know, his real target is the original shares in her hands. The fact that she returned to the Kalen family with him at her side proves she trusts him deeply. Otherwise, why would the head of the Ferrero family linger at her side?”
Her lips curled with a mocking laugh. “Did you think he likes her? Sharon is a divorcee with a child! Do you honestly think he would like her?”
Jamie gave a derisive chuckle. “Don’t underestimate her. Divorced or not, she’s managed to make both Xavier and Julliard completely devoted to her. Even before revealing her true identity, she managed to marry Carter. That alone proves her skills and cunning.”
He met Johanna’s stubborn gaze, his voice cold. “Johanna, stay away from Thomas. His motives are unclear, and you are not capable of controlling him.”
Johanna barely heard him. In her heart, she was more convinced than ever that her brother only wanted to steal Thomas from her–to hand him over to Victoria.
Still, she didn’t argue back. She knew better than to challenge Jamie directly. His nature allowed no defiance, and she didn’t yet have the strength to oppose him.
Lowering her head, she murmured, “I understand.”
Then she turned and left quietly.
By the time the banquet ended, it was already late.
Since both Wendy and Thomas were scheduled to accompany Sharon the next day, Sharon arranged for them to stay overnight at the Kalen family estate.
The estate was vast, though sparsely populated. With the collateral branches of the family living elsewhere, many rooms stood vacant.
On the way to the guest quarters, Wendy offered her gift to Sharon.
“Sharon, this is for you.”
Unlike Carter or Xavier, Wendy couldn’t hand out massive contracts or extravagant luxuries. Instead, she presented a delicate crystal bracelet she had polished and woven herself.
