Kneeling for a Second 220

Chapter 220

Valeria wet a towel with hot water and wiped Margaret’s cheeks and the backs of her hands, glancing at the dinner placed on the nightstand.

She set a small table on the bed so that Margaret could eat comfortably.

Sebastian had bought exactly three servings of oatmeal that were still warm. She took them out, along with two boxes of fruit salad. Handing Sebastian a bowl of oatmeal, she gave him a look, signaling him to eat outside and not take off his mask in front of Margaret.

He looked at the sweet oatmeal with mixed nuts in front of him.

He didn’t touch it and instead said to Valeria, Honey, I want plain oatmeal.”

Valeria’s hand trembled as she held the bowl of oatmeal. She almost spilled it.

She looked at Sebastian.

Then, she set the bowl of plain oatmeal in front of him.

Margaret didn’t notice anything unusual between the two of them. It was perfectly normal for a married couple to have pet names for each other.

While eating her oatmeal, Margaret told Valeria and Sebastian to go book a hotel room nearby and get some rest. It was already January 9th. Work had started again, and they shouldn’t delay their jobs.

Valeria responded absentmindedly.

Just then, Sebastian said, Honey, pass me the spoon.”

YouValeria shot him a glare.

He was doing it on purpose, and she couldn’t refute the term of address.

Then, she grabbed his hand, shoved the spoon into it, and signaled him with her eyes not to take off the mask. She was asking him to go outside and eat.

Margaret glanced at Sebastian, slightly puzzled that the man was still wearing a mask at this time. Shane, why aren’t you eating?”

Smiling half playfully, he said, Margaret, your granddaughter won’t let me eat. She’s controlling me. She won’t let me take off my mask. I’m too scared to eat.”

Vallie!Margaret lightly slapped Valeria’s hand.

Grandmahehe has a cold. He’s not feeling well. It’s better if he wears a mask. He’s worried about crossinfection in the hospital.”

If you’re not feeling well, don’t stay here. Go back and rest. You two have been tired all day.If Margaret weren’t stuck in bed and unable to move around, she would have practically pushed the two of them out herself.

Valeria nodded, giving Sebastian several meaningful looks, telling him to leave first. The man, sitting with his long legs stretched out on the companion chair, slowly retracted them and stood up.

He glanced at Valeria before finally leaving the ward.

Valeria cleared away the leftovers on the table, and Margaret said to her, I don’t need here. There are doctors and nurses. I’ll sleep soon anyway. You go keep Shane company. Book a hotel room outside and get some proper rest.”

“Grandma, I’ll stay here with you tonight.”

I don’t want you to stay.Margaret looked at the red veins in Valeria’s eyes. Child, are you not even going to listen to me now?”

When Valeria walked out of the inpatient building, Sebastian’s car was parked in the parking lot. She went over and knocked on the window, asking if he wanted to book a room and rest.

What she really meant was she hoped he could go back first.

He had already helped her so much.

She couldn’t leave Margaret right now. She needed another two days before she could be discharged.

Even after discharge, she would still need someone to help take care of her.

So, you just used me and tossed me aside? How heartless of you.The window slowly rolled down, revealing Sebastian in the back seat, his face sharply defined. He leaned back, a faint smile on his lips. Oh, poor me. How did I run into such a heartless woman?”

It was 9:30 pm. It was a cold and silent night.

The car lights were off, and only the faint glow of a streetlamp not far away shone in.

Half of his face was cast in shadow. It was impossible to tell if the trace of a smile at the corner of his lips was mockery or quiet acceptance –acceptance that, in his world, his longing was

Valeria looked at him. She pressed her lips together without speaking. Her gaze was dark and as calm as still water.
