Chapter 166 He Only Craves Her
“Why can’t I remain unmoved?” Brian looked at Chloe seriously. “Chloe, I’m not a child. I know the difference between gratitude and love.
“I’m grateful for her because all my life everyone around me has wanted to take advantage of me. My father wanted to use me to trap my mom. My grandpa only wanted me to become a strong heir who could carry the Steele family’s legacy.
“But that girl didn’t take advantage of me. She just saved me out of kindness. After I met you, I was even more grateful to her.
“Because if not for her, I would have died, and I wouldn’t have met you. I wouldn’t have understood that I could have such strong feelings for someone.
“But…” Brian paused for a while before saying with absolute conviction, “Other than gratitude, I don’t have any feelings for her, even if she did save my life.
“If you are worried, I can promise you that when I find her in the future, I won’t meet her at all. I’ll get my employees to repay her instead.”
Chloe looked at how serious Brian was. The earnest look in his eyes and his words told her that he was sincere.
“If you ever find her, take me with you when you go to see her,” she said.
Brian was a little caught off guard by her response.
Chloe continued, “I want to thank her for saving you too. It’s thanks to her that I got to meet
you.”
“Y–You really don’t mind at all?” Brian asked.
“I’m not so unreasonable that I can’t differentiate right from wrong,” Chloe said.
“Besides, you did nothing wrong. You’re just looking for the person who saved your life and want to thank her. There’s nothing wrong with that. Besides, I can’t worry about things that haven’t happened yet. But…”
She took a deep breath before continuing, “If in the future, you ever have feelings for someone else and can’t be devoted to me, I’ll just choose to leave.”
Perhaps it was the lesson she’d learned from Curtis, so when she heard that Brian had also been looking for the girl who’d saved his life, she’d been alarmed.
But Brian wasn’t Curtis.
Curtis had betrayed their marriage by using the excuses, saying he wanted to repay Sonya for
saving him and that they were just friends. That had disgusted her to no end.
So after hearing Willow’s words, she’d been filled with unease. She was worried that history was going to repeat itself.
“Chloe, I will never ever fall for anyone else. Whether it’s now or in the future, you’re the only woman in my heart.”
Brian went up to hold Chloe’s hand. When he finally felt the warmth of her palm, the emptiness within him gradually vanished.
Lifting her hand, he pressed the back of hers to his cheek. He always craved her warmth.
When he’d first started developing feelings for Chloe, he’d indeed confused her with the girl who’d saved his life years ago. But it was because they were both so radiant.
The darker a person’s world, the more they craved such brilliance.
When he was younger, he’d been curious about that brilliance, perhaps even a little bewildered.
He couldn’t fathom why a little girl would go to such lengths to save someone who wasn’t related to her at all. He couldn’t understand why she hadn’t asked for anything in return or
taken advantage of him.
Yet, at that moment, he craved Chloe’s brilliance. He wanted her to be by his side forever.
Even if that brilliance would make him feel inferior and anxious, and he had to lay bare his every joy and sorrow to her, and even entrust his life in her hands, he still wasn’t willing to part with her.
That was how passionate he was about her. It was strange, yet familiar at the same time.
They say that the Steele family was full of madmen, terrifyingly obsessive in their affections. It seemed like he truly was one of them.
“So, you see, Chloe, your fears about me having feelings for someone else will never come true. As for you, you can’t abandon me.
“If you want to talk about saving lives, you’ve saved mine too–and more than once,” Brian said, staring right at her.
“I once told you that if you want to help me, you have to do it until the very end. You can’t be
half–hearted about it.”
She couldn’t throw him back into the dark, meaningless world.
With that, he crushed his lips to hers, as if trying to express how much he loved her.
Curtis woke up the next day with a splitting headache. He had zero recollection of what happened the night before.
“Curtis!” Sonya walked over to his bedside. “You’re awake. You drank so much that you blacked out last night. It took a lot of effort to get you to bed.”
“Really?” Curtis shook his head. He only remembered drinking a few glasses of wine. Nothing else after that.
“Since when has your tolerance for alcohol been so low? I remember you never used to get drunk so easily in the past,” Sonya said.
“Maybe I was too excited last night, so I let my guard down,” Curtis replied.
“By the way, are you free today? Could you accompany me to the hospital?” Sonya asked.
“What is it? Are you feeling unwell?” Curtis asked worriedly.
Sonya replied with a smile, “No. It’s just a little check–up.”
Upon arriving at the hospital, Sonya took a number at the gynecology ward. When it was her turn, she smiled at Curtis and said, “I’m going in. Wait here for me.”
“Okay,” Curtis replied, feeling a little strange.
People usually came to the hospital to check for ailments and illnesses. So why was Sonya smiling? Was he overthinking this?
Soon, Sonya came out of the consultation room to get her blood test.
At the same time, Chloe was still restoring the footage. She kept adjusting it to make it clearer. In the end, she could clearly see a woman’s figure.
Since it was dark, she could only see the outline of the woman’s face but not her features. Still, this was enough for Chloe.
The woman held a cigarette to her lips. The lighter briefly illuminated her face before the flames died down once more.
Chloe fixed her gaze on the magnified figure on the screen.
It was Sonya.
Even if her face wasn’t clear, the contours alone were more than enough for Chloe to confirm that the person smoking in the footage really was Sonya.
