Chapter 152 A Heavy Promise
When Willow flipped to a certain photo in the album, her pupils contracted sharply. After carefully studying Daniel’s three photos again, an involuntary, smug smile spread across her
lips.
It seemed when one door closed, another one always opened.
Once Curtis finally managed to calm Sonya and send her home, he drove Helen and Joanne
back to the villa.
Helen and Joanne had been living there ever since Curtis and Chloe had divorced.
“Sonya is hopeless. I thought she was a captain at AeroQuest. Having a daughter–in–law like that would’ve made me proud. But now she’s been fired!
“And worse,
her negligence in saving someone has even made the news! If word gets back to the people in the countryside that I have a daughter–in–law like her, they’ll tear me to shreds!

Helen fumed.
If it had just been Chloe accusing Sonya of refusing to help, even if a few people knew, it wouldn’t have been a problem.
But Helen now realized that the story had made the news. On the way back, Joanne had even found a video online of Sonya’s kidnapping.
In it, Sonya had admitted that she’d seen her colleague burning. Even though a fire extinguisher had been right beside her, she’d been too terrified and ran away.
Beneath the video was a flood of condemnation.
Joanne casually read a few of the comments aloud to Helen, nearly giving her a heart attack. The insults were merciless. If Curtis really married Sonya, those same curses would be hurled
at them.
How could she possibly hold her head high in the countryside again?
“Curtis, I’m making it perfectly clear that I forbid that Sonya from ever becoming a part of this family. If you marry her, I’ll drop dead right in front of you!” Helen yelled.
“Mom!” Curtis rubbed his temples. “Sonya was just scared back then. She didn’t mean to refuse help. Are you really asking me to break up with her just because AeroQuest Airlines fired her? What will people think of me?”
“What will they
things with her,” Helen shot back.
Joanne added, “Curtis, listen to Mom. Sonya’s reputation is terrible. If you actually marry her, people will point at me and Mom every time we go out.”
“But you both approved of us before,” Curtis replied. “Sonya’s setback is temporary. Her career will recover. Besides, she saved my life. How can I abandon her when she needs me most?”
“So you’re trying to drive me to my grave?” Helen wailed.
Curtis felt powerless.
“Curtis, Sonya saved your life! But you’ve already given her mountains of jewelry. That’s more than enough compensation!” Joanne snapped.
Her mind flicked back to the divorce press conference, when Chloe had flung out that shocking figure of 50 million dollars‘ worth of jewelry.
The memory still made her chest tighten with envy. Curtis had never been that
her.

“But…” Curtis‘ phone suddenly rang. He picked up, and his face instantly darkened. Turning to Helen and Joanne, he said curtly, “Something’s happened at the office. I need to head back right away.”
He rushed out after receiving the call. The company’s stock was plummeting once again because of Sonya’s scandal.
Since they’d publicly acknowledged their relationship, her current predicament inevitably dragged both Curtis and Green Tech down with her.
By the time Curtis arrived at Sonya’s apartment after rushing through an emergency PR crisis meeting at work, it was already late.
“Curtis!” Sonya flung herself into his arms the moment she saw him. “I thought you weren’t coming!”
“Of course I’d come,” Curtis said gently.
“I never imagined things would turn out like this. Even if I didn’t save Bernard, I still helped put out the fire! How can they just strip me of my firefighting heroine title like it meant nothing?” Sonya’s voice shook with resentment.
“And AeroQuest Airlines fired me without so much as a warning! They think they can crush me, but I’ll prove them wrong! I don’t go down that easily.”

She lifted her gaze to his. “Curtis, do you believe in me? Do you believe that one day, everyone who scorned and abandoned me will beg for the chance to kneel at my feet?”
Curtis managed a smile. “I do.”
Sonya let out a relieved sigh. “How are your mom and sister? They were awful to me at the mall today, but I won’t hold it against them. Once this whole mess settles down, can we finally get engaged? We’ve already lost so much time. I don’t want to waste any more.”
Curtis‘ expression darkened. “Can we hold off on the engagement for now?”
Sonya stiffened. “Are you regretting this?”
“No, it’s just…” Curtis faltered. “Because of what happened to you today, Green Tech’s stock has taken a big hit. My mom and Joanne are still struggling to accept it, so…
་་
“So you want to break up with me?” Sonya pulled away from his arms, glaring at him. “I thought you were different, but you’re just like the rest. Fine, let’s break up. I’ll pretend I never saved your life back then!”
“That’s not what I mean!” Curtis said quickly.
“Sonya, I could never forget what you did for me. I just think we should wait until the company stabilizes and the scandal blows over before we get engaged. By then, I’ll convince
my mom too.‘
“Really?” Sonya lifted her gaze to him.
“Really, I swear it!” Curtis vowed. “If I ever betray you, may lightning strike me, and may I
never find what I seek!”
Only then did Sonya smile with satisfaction. She leaned into his arms. “Don’t you dare forget your oath, Curtis. I don’t care how others see me or treat me, but you must never let me down!
M
Curtis pressed his lips together and held her tightly.
Yes, he couldn’t let Sonya down.
At first, he’d treated her well only out of gratitude for her kindness. But now, that same gratitude felt like a mountain on his chest, crushing him and making it hard to breathe.
…
Chloe was temporarily staying at Brian’s apartment.
He’d originally wanted her to move into the Steele residence, but she’d felt it was inappropriate since they weren’t married yet.
