Chapter 61
Just as their eyes met, Zachary’s phone rang. It was an unfamiliar number.
Jessica watched his profile as his relaxed brow slowly formed a frown.
Zachary glanced at the phone lying by the flowers. “My hands are dirty. Can you answer the phone for me?”
Jessica let out a soft “okay” and carefully got up, sitting next to him. However, he took up so much space that she couldn’t escape touching him. Every brush of contact felt like a spark between them. It was as if she were being burned by embers.
She felt the hardness of his muscles. They were far from soft and more like solid stone pressing against her.
Zachary shifted slightly to the side, giving her a bit of room. The two of them squeezed onto the single couch as if they were a long–time couple.
She picked up the phone, swiped to answer, and held it out to him. He didn’t even look at it, completely absorbed in trimming the flowers.
“Hello, Zachary,” a woman said.
Jessica’s heart skipped a beat. It sounded just like Evelyn.
Jessica glanced at Zachary, but he ignored her gaze.
Then, it clicked. She remembered Joshua saying that Zachary didn’t want any involvement with Evelyn. When he’d asked her to answer the call, he’d really meant that he wanted her to
take the call.
She knew she could manage it.
“Hello,” Jessica murmured, lowering her voice to make sure Evelyn wouldn’t recognize her.
Zachary finally smiled.
There was a brief pause on the other end. Elsewhere, Evelyn glanced at her phone and continued, “This is Evelyn. I wanted to speak with Zachary.”
Even Jessica found the gentle tone pleasant.
“Ms. Sutton, it’s 11:00 pm. Why are you calling my husband? He just went to take a shower. If it’s not urgent, I can have him call you later,” Jessica replied, keeping her tone polite but firm.
“I’m sorry for bothering you. I’ll reach out to him tomorrow,” Evelyn said nervously.
“Alright, then. Goodbye,” Jessica replied with a soft smile.

Before Evelyn hung up, Jessica called out in a sweet, playful voice, “Honey, are you done yet? I’ve been waiting for you!”
The call ended with a beep.
Zachary tilted his head and looked at her with a faint smile.
“How was that? Pretty convincing, right?” she said, like a child proud of a perfect score.
Before she could finish, Zachary removed the disposable gloves from his hands and slowly leaned over, pressing her against the couch.
“Zachary…” Jessica gasped, placing her hands on his shoulders.
His hot body burned through her palms, and a strange heat spread through her entire body.
His phone fell to the floor.
Their mixed breaths soon filled the space.
From the shadows, she couldn’t read his expression as he leaned so close.
He carefully took off his glasses and placed them on the coffee table. This was only the second time she had seen his eyes. They were sharp, bright, and clear, unlike his usual distant, brooding gaze. There was neither coldness nor arrogance in them.
Jessica was mesmerized.
She remembered that particular moment. The first time they had lain together, the very first thing he had done was remove his glasses.
He wanted her.
Her chest tightened, and a wave of panic swept through her.
Zachary bent closer, resting his forehead against hers. His breath was warm and uneven, as if he had been holding back for too long.
“Honey…” he moaned.
Jessica murmured, “You’re going too far, Zachary,”
She raised her slender arms, trying to push him away, but her strength was less than a third of his. Her hands were effortlessly shifted aside, and their bodies fit together perfectly.
“We’re married, Jessica,” he said, reminding her.
“But you promised to give me some time…” she whispered, her face turning bright red.
“Kissing you isn’t something that requires a schedule, is it?” he teased.

In that moment, he seemed like a small, helpless child craving her warmth.
