Chapter 53 What Did You Do for Raine
Raine was the refined socialite whom Regina had trained from a young age, while Nancy was a poor nobody. Besides, the latter was indifferent toward her. Regina was certain that anyone in
their right mind would choose Raine over Nancy.
Despite feeling aggrieved, Raine forced a tough front. She told Regina tearfully, “Mom, Grandma is right. You shouldn’t speak about Nancy like that. She did nothing wrong.”
When Regina saw how sensible Raine was being, she felt her heart ache for her.
However, Martha saw through her act and snorted. “That’s definitely a good way to word it. If you’re truly looking out for Nancy, why did you agree to have her kneel?”
Raine lowered her head. “Grandma, I tried my best.”
Although Wendy also felt afraid of Martha, she was unwilling to let the chance to humiliate
Nancy slip by.
“Grandma, Raine is just looking out for Nancy. It’s fine if Nancy isn’t willing to kneel. However, I
won’t retract what I said online. How’s that?”
After saying that, Wendy looked at Nancy provocatively. The former wouldn’t allow Nancy to have it both ways.
Nancy spoke clearly. “Sure. You don’t need to retract it.”
Wendy froze for a moment before sneering. “Fine, then.”
Raine grew anxious. “Nancy, won’t this affect your company’s reputation? Let me talk to Wendy
again-”
“Since she has her pride to worry about, let’s not get in her way,” Regina interrupted before turning to Martha. “Martha, lunch is ready. Let’s eat together.”
Since Nancy didn’t know what was good for her, Regina figured there was no need to help her. It wasn’t her problem if Duran Corporation went out of business.
and Raine.
Plus, this was a chance for Martha to see the stark difference between Nancy
Martha first took a look at Nancy. After seeing her nod, Martha replied coolly, “Let’s eat for now.”
At the dining table, Andrew pulled out a chair for Martha, who took the seat at the head of the table Meanwhile, Nancy took the seat to her right.
Andrew looked at Nancy pointedly. “Nancy, take good care of your grandmother.”
Martha replied coolly, “I’m in excellent health and require no assistance.”
Andrew felt a bit helpless after being met with flat refusal. He quietly retreated to his own seat.
During the meal, Martha asked Nancy, “How have you been doing lately?”
“Everything’s going well, Grandma. There’s no need to worry about me,” Nancy answered gently

Martha gave her a look of approval. “Alright.”
Looking at the warm exchange between them made Raine grip her fork tightly.
Raine had tried so long to please Martha, yet the latter always treated her indifferently.
However, Martha was now treating Nancy so tenderly. Raine couldn’t help but think that blood ties mattered a lot to the older folk like Martha.
“Nancy, how are you planning to settle the company’s ongoing issue?” Raine asked, her expression filled with curiosity and faux concern. “I saw that Duran Corporation is under a lot of criticism right now. If you need any help, do let me know.”
“Sure. I hope you can find a better way to help me solve this crisis–one that doesn’t require me to kneel, of course.” Nancy smiled.
Raine’s cheeks flushed, her expression clouded with guilt. “Nancy, it’s my fault that I didn’t manage to solve it for you.”
Regina’s tone carried a slight edge. “At least Raine tried to help you. How about you? What did you
ever do for her?”
“I don’t even need her help,” Nancy replied indifferently.
Wendy said, “Mrs. Lidell, it’s fine. Nancy is very capable. I bet she can solve her company’s problems without any assistance.”
“That’s true, indeed. Let’s eat now.” Regina then served Raine some food. “Here you go.
Raine looked at Regina happily. “Thank you, Mom.‘

Nancy paid no attention to the warm scene unfolding before her. Instead, she kept chatting with Martha to get to know her better. After finding out that Martha practiced calligraphy, Nancy suggested joining her for a session next time.
Upon hearing that, Wendy couldn’t help asking, “Do you think you can practice calligraphy just by picking up a brush?”
Raine quickly said, “Wendy, don’t be like that. I heard that there is plenty of hay and straw in the countryside. Perhaps Nancy practiced her calligraphy by tying some together.”
Immediately, Regina’s face turned grim.
Wendy snorted in response. “That’s true! I do envy you a lot, Nancy. I’m sure life in the countryside must have been so carefree.”
Nancy replied, “You’re right. In the countryside, people are honest and sincere. You rarely see any scheming hypocrites or double–faced people around.”
