Each word landed in her chest like a slow and heavy thud. 

“So… you still remember me.” 

Sebastian had fallen asleep, but Valeria hadn’t. She switched on the living room’s air- conditioner and fetched a blanket to drape over him. 

She sat on the carpet, wrapping her knees with her arms and leaning against the couch. Every so often, she could hear him murmuring her name in his drunken sleep. 

He had called her Valeria. He had also called her Jane. 

Apart from Margaret, she had hardly heard anyone call her “Jane” in the past seven years. 

Valeria had never fully let go of the person she was seven years ago, but hearing Sebastian call her “Jane” again felt almost like a dream. 

That night, she drifted in and out of sleep, as if she had been transported back in time. 

She was walking along the narrow path behind the school. Sebastian was ahead, and she followed a few steps behind. The weather was cold, and she blew into her palms for warmth. 

The following day was her birthday. She had never expected him to spend it with her, yet deep down, she held a sliver of hope. 

She asked him cautiously whether he’d be free the next day, only for him to say that he was 

busy. 

Valeria felt disappointed, but since she was walking behind Sebastian, he didn’t notice it. 

Maybe it was written all over her face, because even though he was ahead of her, he seemed to sense her presence. The air around them grew still. He stopped, and she nearly bumped into 

his back 

Sebastian asked her what was going on the following day. 

Valería shook her head, replying, “Oh, there’s nothing.” 

The next day was actually her birthday. 

Sebastian wasn’t busy, so he agreed to see a movie with her that evening. They picked an unpopular film with hardly anyone in the theater and sat in the back rows. 

The movie was boring, but she couldn’t have been happier.

When they walked out of the theater, there was a claw machine nearby. Inside was a stuffed bunny with bee wings, and Valeria loved it. 

She hoped Sebastian would win it for her. Instead, he called it ugly and said a bunny with bee wings was ridiculous. He even went on to tease her for having such a strange taste, but he still won it for her. 

She treated it like a birthday present and posted a photo on her Instagram. She archived the post so only she could see it. 

For years, she had rarely dreamed about the past. However, ever since running into Sebastian again, her old memories kept slipping into her dreams. 

She no longer celebrated her own birthday, only Selena’s. 

However, Valeria’s birthday was coming, and Sebastian didn’t know their birthdays were only days apart. They were both born in the dead of winter. 

Valeria woke up at 6:00 am. After rubbing the stiffness from her neck and getting dressed, she headed out to buy breakfast. On her way out, she glanced at Sebastian, who was still asleep on 

the couch. 

She bought three breakfasts, dropping one off for Lucy before returning home. By then, Sebastian was awake, looking pale and sluggish from what was clearly a hangover. 

Rubbing his temples, he gave her a faint, gravelly -voiced complaint. “You’re so heartless to leave me on the couch.” 

Valeria set the food on the table. “That couch is comfier than the bed.” 

He had picked the couch out himself–expensive, loaded with features, and even had a massage function. Lying on it felt like sinking into a cloud. 

Her bedroom had an old wooden bed that creaked every time two people moved around on it. 

His clothes still carried the sharp scent of alcohol. After a shower, he found himself with nothing to wear. He wasn’t about to put on Shane’s clothes, so he pulled on one of Valeria’s nightgowns from the rack. 

It was pink in color. The baggy fit looked ridiculous on him. 

Valeria glanced at him, fighting to keep a smile from breaking through. 

Sebastian commented, “Go ahead and laugh. Don’t hold it in.” 

She still managed to keep a straight face.

He wandered into the kitchen and leaned against the doorway, watching Valeria move around, She tied her hair into a messy ponytail as she carried a plate of fluffy scrambled eggs from the 

stove. 

The heat made her flinch, and after setting it on the table, she brushed her earlobe to ease the sting on her fingertips. 

Sebastian frowned at the scrambled egg and stared at it for a moment, lost in thought.
