Chapter 154

Selena had only come out to use the bathroom before heading back to her room.

Valeria pushed open Selena’s bedroom door and set a warm box of milk on the nightstand.

It was already 10:00 pm, and she hadn’t realized she and Sebastian had been in the kitchen

that long.

After finishing the milk, Selena lay down and drifted off to sleep.

By then, Sebastian had already left.

Valeria went to the bathroom to take a shower.

In the mirror, she caught her reflection. The water and the lather from the body wash slid over her chest, stinging slightly. She quickly rinsed off the foam and looked into the foggy mirror, seeing marks all over her body.

The following morning, Valeria went out to buy breakfast and brought some for Lucy.

Lucy asked whether she had thanked Sebastian for the help.

Valeria nodded in response. Realizing Lucy still couldn’t see, she answered, I took him out to

dinner.”

Does Dr. Grant have a thing for you or something?Lucy immediately saw through it. Ever since that night when Sebastian came to their house and took her blood pressure, she had suspected it.

It was especially so, considering how Selena was really close to Sebastian and excitedly greeted him. She called him Mr. Grantas soon as she saw him.

Valeria pursed her lips softly as she poured the oatmeal into a bowl and handed it to Lucy.

I—”

Before she could finish her sentence, Lucy interrupted, Dr. Grant comes from a wealthy family. Marrying into that kind of family is no walk in the park.”

She hoped Valeria could meet the right person, but joining an affluent family as a single mom could be rough.

Lucy had known Valeria for three years. At first, Lucy hadn’t liked her. She resented Shane for marrying Valeria in a contract marriage solely to appease his father’s peace of mind.

Chapter 154

Valeria was beautiful, but she had a child out of wedlock and married Shane.

A few older women in the neighborhood who were close to Lucy gave Valeria judgmental looks, saying that Shane was at a losing end for marrying a woman that pretty with a kid.

At first, Lucy scolded Shane, too. If it was just to appease his father, he could’ve just faked the marriage. Why make it real, only to divorce later?

Now, Shane was officially divorced.

He had spent years overseas, dated a few women, but never brought anyone home or made things official.

Lucy was worried, too. Over time, though, she had genuinely come to see Valeria and Selena as family.

In the neighborhood, whenever people talked trash about Valeria and Selena behind their backs, Lucy stood up to them and didn’t hold back.

A few years ago, during New Year’s, Shane came back home. Lucy tried to get him and Valeria to remarry, but the two treated each other like strangers.

There’s nothing between us,Valeria commented.

Lucy took her hand as she said, What do you mean by that? He was at your place last night, wasn’t he?”

Valeria was surprised. How did you know?”

Our neighbor, Martha, who lives downstairs, saw him leaving your place after 10:00 pm and texted me about it. I told her he’s your cousin, that he had helped change your door lock.

Now she wants me to get her a discount on the door lock for her place.”

I will never be with Dr. Grant,Valeria insisted firmly. She set out Lucy’s postmeal medication and poured her a glass of water.

You young folks do whatever you want. I just don’t want to see you get hurt,Lucy said.

Valeria understood that Lucy really cared about her.

Once Selena’s surgery was over and she had recovered, Lucy’s eyesight would also improve by the New Year. That would be the time to say goodbye.

Valeria looked at Lucy’s unfocused eyes and waved a finger in front of her face,

She didn’t tell Lucy that she planned to leave Slate City with Selena after the New Year. After all, counting down the days to say goodbye was painful.

Chapter 154

3/3

That afternoon, Valeria received a call from Shawn’s surgical team. They said the operation had been scheduled for the coming Friday.

Soon after, Sebastian called. He told her he would be going to Broburgh University Teaching Hospital to observe a rare, highprofile surgery. There were only about 100 known cases of such surgeries worldwide, drawing dozens of top specialists and multiple media outlets.

Sebastian would be travelling with Shawn’s team. After a day of rest upon getting back, Friday would be the day for Selena’s surgery.

In the meantime, Valeria made all the necessary preparations, rearranging her work schedule
