Chapter 149 No Good Comes From Being Good
Lena’s body went rigid. That voice…
Could it have been that the person Ethan had just called to pick him up was Thomas, her ex- boyfriend?
As the saying went, things rarely turned out the way one hoped.
Lena slowly turned around, and a figure came into view.
His tall, lean frame was wrapped in a perfectly tailored black suit, and paired with his
handsome face, he made for an enticing sight that could make many women’s imaginations
run wild.
It really was Thomas.
Lena groaned inwardly.
She forced an awkward smile. “What a coincidence!”
“Yes, quite a coincidence,” Thomas replied as he stepped into the private room, his gaze bearing down on her.
Lena instinctively licked her dry lips. Thomas‘ features were sharp and well–defined, especially those narrow, deep–set eyes that, when fixed on someone, carried an almost suffocating pressure. He exuded an air of restraint and discipline.
His eyes shifted past Lena to the unconscious Ethan. “If I hadn’t shown up, were you planning to undress Ethan? After all, you did the same thing to me back then, didn’t you?”
Lena’s face immediately flushed. How could he draw such a comparison?
Back then, she’d been driven by nothing more than desire for his body. Now, she was simply trying to do a good deed!
“I wasn’t stripping Ethan! He threw up, and it got on his clothes. I was just helping him take
off his coat!”
“Then why were you unbuttoning his shirt?” Thomas‘ sharp gaze pinned her in place.
“To help him breathe a little better!” she shot back, her expression painfully sincere.
After all, Thomas was one of the top lawyers in Corvessia. A single look from him was enough to make anyone feel guilty.
Seeing that he still didn’t believe her, Lena quickly added, “I swear I had no ulterior motive! Ethan isn’t even my type. Even if he stripped and danced in front of me, I wouldn’t feel a thing!

Thomas raised an eyebrow but said nothing more, instead turning to steady Ethan. “How
much did he drink?”
“Less than three bottles, I think,” she replied.
“What about you?”
“I only had three or four drinks. I’m not drunk.”
“I’ll drive you home,” Thomas said.
Lena was stunned. The last thing she wanted was for Thomas to take her home.
“It’s fine. Just take him. I’ll manage on my own. I’ll call a driver.”
Thomas‘ dark, commanding eyes narrowed, and his thin lips pressed into a cold line before he uttered two clipped words, “Follow me.”
His car was parked just outside the bar. He helped Ethan into the back seat, then swung open the passenger door. “Get in.”
Lena hesitated, ready to turn and run until his next words pinned her in place. “Do you want to get in willingly, or should I sue you for attempted indecent assault on Ethan?”
Lena stopped in her tracks, at a loss for words. This, she thought, was the very definition of good intentions being punished.
Lena awkwardly shifted in the passenger seat as Thomas pulled the car away from the bar.
His deep, refined voice broke the quiet. “Your address.”
Reluctantly, Lena gave it to him, and silence quickly settled over the car. Facing forward, she tried to hide her embarrassment, though she kept stealing glances at Thomas from the corner
of her eye.
He looked even more handsome than he had when they’d broken up. The youthful innocence was gone, replaced by a calm, mature demeanor and air of discipline.
It made her desperately want to rip off his suit and push him into a wild frenzy of desire-
“Stop!” Lena snapped at herself inwardly.
What on earth was she thinking? They weren’t together anymore.
When the car stopped in front of her apartment complex, Lena murmured a quick thank you, unbuckled her seatbelt, and was about to step out when Thomas‘ voice cut through the air.
“After we broke up,
did you ever regret it?”

Lena froze. “No. I’m glad we broke up.
She pushed the door open, but his hand suddenly closed around her wrist. “Glad? Did you hate being with me that much?”
He fixed his gaze on her, a rare shadow of gloom passing over his refined features.
Even then, he carried himself with strict, unyielding control. His grip on her wrist was precise, using just enough force to keep her from pulling free but without hurting her.
“I didn’t hate being with you. In fact, I was quite drawn to your body back then,” Lena said
with a smile.
“But just like someone who eats fine food every day eventually grows tired of it, I simply got bored.”
He glared at her.
“Mr. Earlhart, could you let go now?” she asked.
Thomas‘ lips pressed into a thin line before he finally released her.
Lena stepped out of the car. “Oh, and if you ever feel nostalgic about the past, Mr. Earlhart, I wouldn’t mind another roll in the hay. After all, it’s perfectly fine to revisit something you’ve already grown tired of.”
She wasn’t surprised by the coldness in his eyes as she shut the door and walked into her apartment complex without a backward glance.
A proud man like him would naturally despise her for saying something like that.
They were never meant to be. He was a man who hated complications, and she was someone who lived perpetually on the edge of them.
Thinking of that, Lena gave a wry smile and consoled herself. It was only a man, after all. Her life had plenty more to it than just men.
…
The next day, Lena went shopping at the mall with Chloe to pick up a few things.
“By the way, you didn’t come back to my place last night. Did you stay at Brian’s?” Lena asked.
“Yeah,” Chloe admitted. She’d originally planned to head back to Lena’s apartment, but Brian had looked like he couldn’t be left alone.
He’d said, “Chloe, you know the perfume triggered an episode. I’m afraid I’ll have nightmares again tonight.”

The refusal she’d been ready to give had simply caught in her throat.
“So, are you two going to live together?” Lena asked curiously.
“I think so,” Chloe admitted.
“Well, just remember to play it safe. Unless you’re ready for a baby, then ignore me,” Lena
teased.
“Where is your mind going? Even if Brian and I live together, we’re nowhere near that stage yet!” Chloe protested.
Lena shrugged. “Maybe not yet, but who knows what’ll happen later? Be honest. Haven’t you ever felt such a strong desire for him that you wanted to throw yourself at him completely?”
Chloe fell silent, feeling a flicker of guilt. Fine, maybe there was a tiny bit of truth to that.
As the two chatted, Chloe suddenly stopped, a frown creasing her brow.
“What’s wrong?” Lena asked, following Chloe’s gaze.
Not far ahead, Helen and Joanne were walking right beside Sonya, their arms full of shopping
bags.
Talk about running into the enemy.
