Chapter 28

“You did well, but if something like this happens again, remember to tell me. Don’t act rashly.

11

Zachary reached out and brushed a crumb from the corner of Jessica’s lips.

She then wondered if he meant that he would protect her if anything were to happen.

Jessica froze in her seat, and the spot where he had touched felt like it was burning hot. Her heart thumped wildly, making her breath unsteady as her cheeks flushed red.

All of a sudden, Zachary seemed unbelievably gentle, and Jessica’s mind went blank.

“I’ll go shower first.” He reached out and patted her head before leaving the table.

He had just patted her head. Jessica stood there in a daze, her eyes following him until he disappeared into the room.

Then, she let out a long breath and pinched her cheeks to make sure she wasn’t dreaming.

No one had ever told her before that she didn’t need to be afraid as long as they were around. Yet, everything Zachary had said just now carried that meaning.

As Jessica ate absentmindedly, she blushed as she thought of what he had said just now.

After he finished showering, Zachary went to the study to work on the computer.

Jessica sat on the little couch in the study, sketching drafts for work. However, her mind was completely blank, filled with the thoughts of Zachary’s gestures from earlier.

Feeling frustrated, she tossed her laptop aside and flopped on the couch.

Zachary glanced at her, noticing the curves of her perfect figure that were showing faintly beneath her silk loungewear, and his throat bobbed involuntarily.

Suddenly, she seemed very cute to him.

Not long after that, Jessica sat back up and set her sketchpad aside. Then, she quietly typed something on her computer.

“Zachary.” She tilted her head toward him.

“Yes?”

“When you helped me move, where did you put my box of sketchbooks?” She could remember that Zachary had helped her tidy up some of her things.

He slowly got up and walked to the wall of books. Then, he took out a large box from the

display shelves. “Are you talking about this one?”

“Yes, that’s it.” Jessica knelt on the couch, reaching out for the box as if it were a treasure.

“You haven’t prepared any drafts, have you?” Zachary saw right through her.

Jessica chuckled sheepishly, hugging the box as she opened it on the couch. “It’s fine. I still have plenty of copies in stock.”

But Zachary didn’t return to the desk. Instead, he sat beside her, draping one arm over the back of the couch behind her.

Jessica tensed up instantly. She didn’t know what he was doing. Was he trying to kiss her, or…

She carefully looked at Zachary. “You…

“I just want to take a look.” His tone was perfectly natural.

“I see.” Jessica’s hands trembled. It was late at night, and he was so close that she could feel

the warmth of his breath.

The sandalwood scent clinging to him slowly enveloped her.

She hadn’t prepared any new drafts, so all she could do was flip through her old ones to see if any might work.

As she turned the pages one by one, Zachary’s gaze followed each one.

He casually picked up a sketch and studied it closely. He thought that it looked familiar, but he couldn’t place where he had seen it.

Jessica quickly snatched it back and shoved it into the box, terrified that he might notice something.

“I’ll sort through them first and show you later. You should just go back to work for now. Jessica hurriedly scooted a little further away.

Zachary chuckled slightly, then rose and returned to his desk.

His eyes landed on the tulips, and he reached out, letting his fingers brush them lightly. A faint smile tugged at the corners of his lips before he returned to his work.
