Chapter 131
Valeria made her way past the clusters of relatives and walked to the side of her daughter’s bed.
Turning to Sebastian, she said, “Thank you for helping. Sorry for interrupting your work.”
Sebastian sat in the visitor’s chair, his entire posture distant and cold.
Valeria sat down at the bedside.
Their eyes met.
Sebastian asked, “When is Shane coming?”
Valeria replied, “He just joined a new research group… It’s at least a 40–hour round trip to fly here from Amaran. And with the holiday break less than a month away, it’s not a good time for him to leave…”
“So, what you’re saying is that he’s not coming back?” Sebastian cut her off, his tone suddenly turning icy.
She nodded.
She had called Shane from Lucy’s room.
After being hit during the accident, Lucy had developed temporary vision loss and a fractured tailbone. The doctor had scheduled an eye surgery for the following day. Her tailbone injury didn’t require surgery, and she just needed to rest.
Thankfully, the injuries weren’t severe, but she would still need someone to care for her this
month.
Shane’s career had taken a major step forward this year. Now part of the core research team, he had asked about Selena’s condition during the call.
Valeria felt a bit guilty.
After all, Lucy had only gone to pick up Selena out of kindness, never expecting something like this to happen.
Shane hadn’t said much. After all, Lucy had always treated Selena like her own granddaughter. Without Selena, Lucy would’ve been alone at home all day.
He transferred some money to Valeria and told her to hire a caregiver for Lucy. He mentioned that he wouldn’t be able to return at the moment. He would come back for the New Year.
When Lucy heard that, she smiled.

Sebastian stood up. It felt like something hot and stifling was burning in his chest.
He looked at the gentle and pale Valeria, who had her eyes lowered. He remembered how she’d clung to him in panic the night before, nearly fainting in his arms, trembling uncontrollably.
The fire in his chest had nowhere to go.
He glanced again at the little girl lying in bed, her leg in a cast. He lowered his head, his jaw tight.
Then, he leaned in to Valeria, his voice low and tight, trembling on the edge of losing control. “Did Shane save your life or something? Is that why you’re out here auditioning for Slate City’s Most Devoted Wife award?”
The words were spat through gritted teeth.
He suddenly leaned in so close that Valeria flinched.
Startled, she instinctively pulled back. His breath was warm, brushing her cheek with his
words.
Before she could respond, Sebastian turned and walked off.
Even Selena noticed the stormy expression on his face.
“Mommy, Mr. Grant looked really mad.”
Valeria obviously noticed. She knew him.
She stroked her daughter’s face gently. “Take a break, okay? You’ve watched enough cartoons
for now.”
“Mommy…” Selena grabbed her mother’s hand. “Mr. Grant is really nice.”
“I know.”
“How’s Granny Lucy?”
“Granny Lucy’s having surgery too. I’m going to sit with her this afternoon.”
Later that day, Valeria got a call from a delivery driver. Food was brought directly to the hospital room.
She hadn’t ordered anything, and the meal was clearly from an upscale restaurant. It was definitely not something she would’ve chosen.
There was chicken noodle soup, sautéed mixed vegetables, and a tuna wrap–the kind that kids liked.
Chapter 131
Valeria transferred the money to Sebastian on Venmo. He didn’t accept it, and he didn’t reply
to her either.
Sebastian didn’t show up again. Even after Selena was discharged three days later, he never
came.
Selena rested her chin on Valeria’s shoulder, her little fingers twirling a lock of her mother’s hair. “Mommy, are you and Mr. Grant still fighting?”
Valeria reached up and tapped her daughter’s nose.
