Chapter 141 You Know How Much Chloe Likes My Body
Chloe was shocked. A nearby officer quickly came over and pulled Kevin up to his feet.
Chloe made a gesture to the officer before saying to Kevin, “Speak your mind. You don’t need to get on your knees.”
Kevin chuckled bitterly.
Speak his mind? No one had believed him all those years ago when he had. They’d all thought he was rambling nonsense.
Even when he’d gotten on his knees and begged those people to investigate the truth behind the fire, they’d ignored him and even kicked him out!
His father, Bernard Lowe, had passed away a long time ago, and it wasn’t like he could come back from the dead and clear his name.
But Kevin knew Bernard had been innocent.
“Everyone claimed that my dad was the one who caused that fire in Cloudrion. They said he’d been smoking, and the cigarette butt sparked the fire, which turned into an uncontrollable raging inferno afterward.
“But he’d sworn to me that he’d quit smoking. I know my dad was a man of his word, so he couldn’t have been the person who caused that fire!” Kevin said.
Chloe’s brows knitted together. She’d compiled sources of information and reports about that fire years ago, so naturally she knew that the fire department had determined a lit cigarette stub was the cause of the fire.
Since Bernard had been the first casualty in the fire, based on all evidence gathered, the fire department had concluded that his cigarette stub had sparked the fire.
“Even if he promised you that he’d quit smoking, there’s no guarantee that he didn’t just give in to temptation afterward,” Chloe said.
“No!” Kevin cried. “My dad always kept the promises he made to me! Besides, the doctors found ground–glass nodules in his lungs. They couldn’t operate on them because of where the nodules were located.
“After that, my dad swore he wouldn’t touch another cigarette because he wanted to live longer and watch me grow up!”
Kevin began to choke up as he neared the end of his speech. “Please, Ms. Quall. Please help clear my dad’s name. I don’t want him to have to bear the shame of a crime he isn’t guilty of even in death!”

Chloe couldn’t help but think of her own situation as she looked at Kevin.
That fire all those years ago might have had something to do with Daniel’s disappearance too. Though there was no concrete evidence at hand, the fact was that Daniel had lost all contact with her right after that fire.
If the fire hadn’t started because of Bernard, then who could’ve been behind it?
Chloe really wanted to find out the truth too.
“Alright, I’ll look into it. But I might not be able to give you the results you’re hoping for,” Chloe said.
After all, it had been five years since the incident. Even if there had been any other evidence, it might have gotten lost or destroyed over time.
Plus, it would be more difficult to find answers to a lot of things since Bernard was dead.
Tears streaked down Kevin’s face. “Thank you… Thank you…” he choked out.
Chloe was the only person who’d genuinely offered him help so far. How could he not be grateful to her?
When Chloe left the visitation room, she saw Brian waiting outside for her.
“Did you see Kevin?” Brian asked.
Chloe nodded. “He says Bernard couldn’t have caused the fire five years ago. After Bernard found out that he had nodules in his lungs, he promised Kevin he’d quit smoking.
“So, Kevin firmly believes that Bernard stopped smoking afterward and couldn’t have possibly caused that fire.”
Something glinted in Brian’s eyes. “Are you going to help Kevin uncover the truth then?”
“Yes,” Chloe replied. “Plus, I keep having this feeling that the fire is related to Daniel’s disappearance. I’d originally thought to investigate the matter anyway, so now I can help Kevin uncover the truth too.”
“I’ll help you,” Brian said.
“Alright.” Chloe didn’t refuse him. After all, with another person helping out, it would only increase the possibility of discovering more useful information.
“Why don’t I help Clo instead?” Ethan’s voice suddenly rang out in the hall.
Chloe turned around and saw Ethan walking into the detention center hall. “What are you doing here? Didn’t we agree on meeting up tomorrow before I take you on a tour of the area?”

“I had nothing to do, so I figured I’d pay a visit since you were here,” Ethan answered. “What are you investigating, Clo? I’ll help.”
Ethan had just walked in and hadn’t overheard Brian and Chloe’s full conversation. Chloe filled him in on everything she’d just told Brian.
Ethan hummed. “It won’t be easy to investigate a case from five years ago. But we can always look for clues here and there. Plus… if Sonya had really been by Bernard’s side during the fire and had refused to save him, she might know something we don’t.”
Chloe was thinking the same thing. “I’m afraid Sonya might not tell us even if she does know something. After all, Kevin’s the one who kidnapped her and forced her to publicly admit that she’d left Bernard to die during the fire.
“Because of that, she’s facing so much backlash and being condemned by the public. Why on earth would she reveal the truth and clear Bernard’s name?”
“Let’s do some more digging then. We’ll look further into Sonya too. Maybe we’ll find some valuable information that way,” Ethan said.
“That’s all we can do for now, really–see if there’s any valuable information we can use,”
Chloe said.
“You seem to really be concerned for Kevin, Clo. Why don’t you get him a lawyer?” Ethan
asked.
“Brian’s already appointed one for him,” Chloe said.
“You didn’t forget what my grandpa does, di
“You didn’t forget what my grandpa does, did you, Clo? I can get Kevin the best lawyers in Corvessia,” Ethan said.
Brian retorted by saying, “The best lawyers in Corvessia are in the Steele family’s legal team.”
The air between Brian and Ethan grew hostile once again.
Chloe massaged her temples. Why was it so difficult for Brian and Ethan to get along?
Chloe went to visit her parents‘ house after leaving the detention center. At the Urban Planning Office, all the paperwork for the house was updated so that Chloe’s name was the sole one on it now.
She knew very well that the house’s demolition was part of the town’s development plans. But a lot of her family’s belongings were still in that house.
Since they carried a lot of memories, she planned to pack everything up before having a moving company send it all over to her home in Yarfdale.

Brian and Ethan insisted on packing things up at the house with Chloe.
That was how the two powerful men ended up with their coats off and their sleeves rolled up in Chloe’s parents‘ house, helping her pack and move items like they were movers.
Chloe felt a little reluctant as she watched everything being packed away.
Whenever she used to go there, it had always been four of them in the house. Yet she was the only one there now.
Chloe took the family photo on the table and gazed at it, tears slowly brimming in her eyes. “What’s wrong, Chloe?” Brian’s voice rang out from behind her.
“Oh, it’s nothing,” Chloe quickly answered. She took a deep breath, not wanting Brian and Ethan to see how sad she was. “You two must be thirsty after doing all that heavy work. I’ll buy you guys some drinks from the shop downstairs.”
She swiftly put the family photo in her bag before leaving the house.
That left Brian and Ethan alone there. They glared fiercely at one another.
“Clo hasn’t changed one bit. She never lets anyone see how upset she is. She was looking at her family portrait earlier. Couldn’t you tell how upset she was?” Ethan huffed angrily.
Brian stayed silent, his lips pulled into a tight line.
“I forgot -you and Clo haven’t known one another for long. So what if you two are dating? You don’t understand her at all
“Who knows? She might get sick of you and dump you soon. I’ve known Clo for so many years and even spent so much time in the special forces with her. I know what she likes and dislikes, “Ethan drawled.
He looked at Brian as if he were silently saying that the latter didn’t stand a chance with Chloe.
darkened. He knew Ethan had known Chloe far longer than he had. In fact, he was Brian’s gaze envious of the fact that Chloe and Ethan had spent all those years together in the military- something Brian himself could never hope to experience with her.
“Then I’m sure you know just how much Chloe likes my body,” Brian retorted coldly.
