Chapter 140 What Is Left Unsaid
Brian’s face paled even more than before. It was too late for him to hide all those documents and photos now that Chloe was standing right before him.
“What’s wrong? Are you unwell?” Chloe asked worriedly as she stepped forward. She was looking at Brian’s uneasy expression, entirely ignoring the scattered things on the floor.
Brian’s lips trembled as though he was about to speak, yet he wasn’t entirely sure what to say.
Chloe pressed a hand on his forehead, checking his temperature. She grumbled, “You don’t have a fever. Could it be that you haven’t been resting enough lately?”
“Maybe I’m just a little tired,” Brian muttered.
“Yeah. Look, you dropped all your papers on the floor.” Chloe bent down to pick the scattered documents up from the floor.
“No, it’s okay. I can take them…” Brian quickly tried to stop her, but it was too late. Chloe had already picked some documents up.
“Huh?” She made a curious noise when she saw the photo at the top of the pile. She stared
hard at it, muttering, “This photo…”
Brian instantly froze in his seat. It felt like all the blood in his body had turned into ice.
He desperately wanted to snatch the photo from Chloe’s hands so she would stop looking at it. He scrambled to come up with a reasonable explanation for it on the spot.
Should he… lie to her instead?
Chloe had told him she despised liars the most, and he’d promised that he would never lie to
her.
But once she actually found out the truth, would their relationship then come to an end?
“Why do you have my brother’s photo?” Chloe flipped through the photos she’d picked up and saw that they were all of Daniel. The documents she’d retrieved from the floor were
related to him too.
“I…” Brian made to speak, but his mind had gone blank.
“Did you get all of this so you can help track Daniel down for me?” Chloe asked while going
through the photos. She hadn’t seen many of these photos of Daniel before. “Thank you, Brian.

Chloe’s word of thanks snapped Brian back to the present.
Yes, he was trying to help Chloe find Daniel. But that wasn’t the only reason he’d gotten these documents!
“By the way, can you give me a copy of these photos?” Chloe asked.
“O–of course,” Brian answered.
Chloe held up one of the photos and muttered, “I have no idea when I’ll be able to see Daniel again. Do you have any idea how much I miss him? Did you see the wound on his shoulder? He got it while protecting me.”
Brian was stunned. His hands balled into fists at his side, trembling lightly. He was thankful that Chloe was still looking at the photos and was oblivious to how terrified he was right now.
“Daniel and I were overseas with our parents at the time, and we got caught in the midst of a terrorist attack. Daniel protected me, keeping me tightly tucked in his arms. He nearly lost his life because of it. I might’ve died that day if it weren’t for him.”
Chloe’s eyes teared up as she looked at the scar on Daniel’s shoulder.
“You must really love him,” Brian said.
“Of course. That’s why I need to find him, no matter where he is,” she said.
“What if you don’t?”
“I will–I’ll find Daniel no matter how many years it takes!” There wasn’t a single hint of hesitation in her tone.
Brian was momentarily silent before he mumbled, “Chloe, would you forgive someone if they did something irrevocably wrong to Daniel?”
Chloe shot him a curious look. “What kind of strange question is that? If someone did something bad to Daniel, he’s the one who’ll decide whether to forgive them or not.”
“What about you? Would you forgive that person?” Brian asked, a hint of uneasiness in his
tone.
“Well, it’ll depend on the situation. I’ll never forgive anyone who puts his life danger!” Chloe replied.
Brian swallowed, all other words he’d planned to say now seemingly stuck in his throat and refusing to come out.
Chloe set the photos down and looked at Brian’s pale face. “Why don’t you get some rest? You look really unwell right now.”
“Okay,” Brian said, then watched as Chloe held his hands.

“Your hands are so cold!” Chloe gasped, cupping Brian’s hands between hers. Though it was fall now, the weather wasn’t too cold. Plus, the heaters were on too. Yet Brian’s hands were strangely cold to the touch.
“Are you cold?” Chloe asked.
“A little,” Brian answered.
Chloe then looked down and exhaled her warm breath on Brian’s hands while rubbing them between hers, trying to heat them up.
Brian was taken aback. His hands slowly warmed up as Chloe continued rubbing them.
Was it true that the colder a person was, the more they craved warmth? And that once they felt such warmth, it was harder for them to let go of it?
“I’ll find Daniel, Chloe,” Brian said.
Maybe once he found Daniel, he would finally have the courage to tell Chloe the whole truth.
Several days later, Chloe finally met the boy who’d abducted Sonya. She’d taken a lawyer with her for the visit as well.
The boy, Kevin Lowe, was very much different from the masked kidnapper he’d been on the live stream. With how skinny he was, he looked a little weak, and the look on his face was very different from how it had been when he’d faced Sonya.
In fact, it was difficult to imagine that this teenager and the kidnapper were the same person!
“I heard you wanted to see me?” Chloe asked.
“Yes,” Kevin said. He was staring fixedly at Chloe. “I want to know why you helped me. I know you were the reason Mr. Hemming became my defense counsel.”
Kevin had met Chloe on the island as well as at the orphanage before. Though the lawyer, Gordon Hemming, worked for the Steeles, Kevin was well aware of the rumors about what
kind of man Brian was.
He’d even asked Gordon why he’d agreed to be his defense counsel. Gordon had only said that it was because someone had asked Brian to get him a lawyer.
After giving it some thought, Kevin figured Chloe must have been the one who’d requested Brian’s help with his case and gotten Gordon involved.
“I just thought you needed some help,” Chloe answered.
Kevin looked suspiciously at her. “What do you want from me?”

He’d come across far too many adults who pretended to be nice in order to get something in return or did charitable actions in order to boost their reputation. Those people only participated in the orphanage’s events so they could show the public how kind they were.
“I don’t need anything from you. I just don’t want you to ruin your life while trying to uncover the truth,” Chloe answered.
“Are you really that kind–hearted?” Kevin looked incredibly guarded.
Chloe chuckled. “You can always choose not to think of me that way. Who knows? I just might need a favor from you in the future. But that will have to wait until you regain your freedom.”
Just as she was about to leave, Kevin suddenly cried out, “Wait! If you really are that kind, then I hope you can help me clear my dad’s name!”
With that, he fell to his knees before Chloe as everyone in the detention center’s visitation room watched on.
