Chapter 138 I’m Despicable
The moment Brian saw Chloe, his expression changed dramatically.
Had she heard the things Ethan had just said?
What would she think? Would she see him as despicable?
He didn’t care if the whole world thought he was loathsome, but what he feared most was seeing disappointment in her eyes.
At that moment, Chloe’s face gave nothing away.
She stepped forward and said to Ethan, “Let go first.”
Ethan said, “I’ll listen to you, Clo!”
After that, he quickly let go of Brian’s collar.
“How are things at the law firm?” Chloe asked.
Brian trembled slightly when he realized that Chloe had overheard his conversation with Ethan.
Ethan said, “Everything’s been dealt with, and there are no major issues. But Chloe, some people are always setting traps. You have to be careful.”
Chloe smiled faintly and changed the subject. “Here’s the umbrella you lent me last time. You can have it
back.”
She held the umbrella out to Ethan.
Ethan silently looked at it. Back when he left Yarfdale, he’d lent her the umbrella and asked her to return it
to him in Corvessia.
It seemed that leaving that day was a huge mistake.
If he’d realized that it was one of Brian’s schemes and understood what he would lose by leaving, he would never have left Yarfdale. He would have stayed by Chloe’s side and confessed his feelings first. He would never have given Brian the chance to go after her.
Unfortunately, he’d only realized he was too late when he saw the news and found out that Chloe was dating Brian.
So, he’d thoroughly investigated why there’d been a problem at the law firm–and why he’d needed to
return to Corvessia to handle it.
In the end, the trail had led him straight to the Steele family.
That was when he’d realized that Brian had deliberately caused trouble to drive him out of Yarfdale.
“Why aren’t you taking it?” Chloe urged.

Ethan smiled bitterly before accepting the umbrella. “Alright then, I’ll head back to the hotel. I’ll come see
you again tomorrow.”
“Okay, be careful on your way,” Chloe said.
After Ethan left, Chloe turned to Brian. “Did you cause problems for his family’s law firm?”
Brian’s lashes trembled as he slowly lowered his gaze. At that moment, he didn’t even dare to meet her
gaze.
“You once said that as long as I asked, you’d never hide anything from me.”
Brian stiffened, remembering that he had indeed promised her that. He pressed his lips together as he clenched his hands nervously. “Yes, I did it.”
“Why did you do that?” Chloe asked.
“I was afraid that Ethan would interfere with me pursuing you. He has a special place in your heart. He’s a comrade you could entrust your life to in a crisis, someone you trust.” Brian’s voice was low.
“And so?” Chloe asked.
“So I…” Brian raised his gaze, meeting hers head–on.
Her eyes were so bright and honest. Compared to her, he was nothing but dark and despicable.
“So I thought you’d like Ethan more than me,” he said hoarsely.
Chloe held his gaze. “I do like Ethan, but only as a brother and a comrade–in–arms. If I truly had feelings for him beyond that, then it wouldn’t have mattered whether he was in Yarfdale or went back to Corvessia.
She continued, “If I really liked him, did you think I would’ve just started liking someone else simply because he left the city? Brian, do you think my feelings are so trivial and fickle? If you and I were separated for a while someday, do you think I’d easily fall for someone else?”
Brian’s expression immediately changed. “No, Chloe! Don’t ever like or love someone else!”
Chloe pursed her lips. “Brian, I like you. I chose you, and my feelings won’t change so easily. But I don’t like you using such methods and dragging in people around me.”
“I’m sorry.”
Brian was used to being at the top of the food chain, far above everyone else. He never apologized lightly.
Yet, in front of her, he was like a child who’d done something wrong and was afraid of being abandoned.
He apologized obediently.
Looking at Brian lowering his head dejectedly, Chloe’s heart twisted with pain again.
He was clearly the one in the wrong, yet seeing him like this made her heart ache. It was truly

contradictory.
Chloe sighed and gently lifted her hand to his face. “Don’t ever do this again. Not just to Ethan, but to my other friends too. I don’t want you using such methods against them. If you ever do it again, then I really
will-”
He reached out and pressed his fingers against her lips, preventing her from continuing.
“Don’t say anything else. I won’t ever do it again,” Brian whispered.
He lifted his other hand to caress hers on his face, nuzzling his cheek softly against her palm. “Chloe, I’ll be good. I’ll listen to you.”
His husky murmur stirred something in Chloe.
She stiffened, feeling like Brian was suddenly acting like a clingy, spoiled dog. The way he looked at her so intently was incredibly seductive.
“That’s good.”
She felt her mouth go dry and tried to pull her hand away. But he held her hand tightly, unwilling to let go.
She said, “I want some coffee. Let go first.”
“I’ll get it for you.” Brian stretched out his other hand, picked up a cup of coffee, and took a sip.
“You…” Chloe froze.
When she saw him lowering his head toward her, she instantly realized what he was doing and blushed. “I can drink it myself…‘”

The words of refusal felt like they were stuck in her throat. After all, his eyes seemed to be begging her not to reject him.
Chloe sighed softly, sliding her free hand around Brian’s neck.
He was her boyfriend. If he wanted this, she would indulge him.
His lips met hers, and the warm coffee spread into her mouth as he kissed her deeply. The kiss was lingering and passionate all at once. It was as if he were declaring how much he loved her.
Even though Sonya had been kidnapped, her injuries were only superficial. After two days in the hospital, she was discharged.
Her parents, Carla and Vincent, came along with Curtis to take her home.
As they left, Sonya was still cursing. “I’ll make sure that the kidnapper rots in prison! This can’t just be brushed aside! I’ll make sure he’s humiliated twice as much as I was. Curtis, find me the best lawyer you can. I want him to rot in jail for the rest of his life!”

Curtis said, “But Sonya, that boy…”
Before Curtis could finish, Carla said unhappily, “Curtis, don’t tell me you’re planning to let that kidnapper off. You’re Sonya’s fiance now. If you act like this, how can I trust you with my daughter in the future?”
Just as Curtis was about to explain, a swarm of reporters rushed at them, their cameras flashing.
One of them thrust a microphone toward Sonya. “Ms. Miller, when you were kidnapped, you revealed that you once ignored a senior colleague who’d treated you well and left him to die. What were you thinking at
the time?”
In an instant, Sonya froze, and her face turned deathly pale.
